formykids2 4 Posted October 4, 2011 I just found out that I am going to have to stay the night in the hospital after my surgery and that is a bit of a disappointment. Can anyone give me positive thoughts on staying versus going home the same day? I Hate hospitals and being woken up all night and nurses bothering sleep and all of that. Please help me feel better about them making me stay :-(
sassy k's mommy 1 Posted October 4, 2011 I didn't have to stay in the hospital overnight. The doctor allowed me to decided what I wanted to do. However, I wasn't released until about 630pm. I was the first one in surgery.
DawnH 9 Posted October 4, 2011 I had to stay overnight too and it wasn't that big of a deal. It was really nice knowing there were dr.s and nurses there if I needed something. Honestly I didn't sleep a whole lot anyways because of the gas pains. I had to call the nurse in a couple times to help me get out of bed to walk around the nurses station to get the gases moving. The hospital beds with the rails are a lot easier to get out of than a recliner or bed at home. I notice you have kids too so it will give you a little rest before you go home and they want a lot of your attention. That is just my opinion Good luck! 3musketeers 1 Posted October 4, 2011 I stayed overnight and I'm glad I did. I was in quite a bit of discomfort and all the dr's and nurses were really good. I was dreading the hospital stay but I'm glad I stayed. It won't be too bad. Good luck!
Dee29 5 Posted October 4, 2011 I stayed overnight and I preferred it that way. You're having major surgery. I felt better knowing I was in the hospital in case anything went wrong. Plus, you're on a morphine drip which is much better than the stuff you get sent home with, you have the boots on your legs to prevent blood clots, you have round the clock help to help yiu get up and down and use the bathroom etc. You'll be fine. You will probably be out in less than 24 hours. Good luck!
bromo 17 Posted October 4, 2011 I had to stay overnight due to the plication. I am glad I did so as I live alone and it was nice to have help that first night with getting up and such.
DivaD50 0 Posted October 4, 2011 I see that you had the plication and wanted to see how you were doing with that. I also had the plication and lapband on Sept. 29th. I had to stay overnight due to the plication. I am glad I did so as I live alone and it was nice to have help that first night with getting up and such. JimR915 21 Posted October 4, 2011 I went home the same day. But like sassy k, I was the first one in surgery in the morning, and left at about 6pm. They wanted me to eat a couple of meals, go to the bathroom, all that fun stuff to make sure everything was still functioning. I would have stayed over without an argument if they insisted that I do so.

Mommysmen 0 Posted October 4, 2011 I think staying the hospital was the best thing for me. Yeah I was waken up every and made to walk around the hospital. This was to prevent blood clots from forming. I have to say that we I got home I was out and about within in a day. With little pain.
formykids2 4 Posted October 4, 2011 Thanks everyone. I feel better now knowing that it was ok for others. It may turn out to be great since I do have 5 kids at home. Thinking positive!
klariade 7 Posted October 4, 2011 I had to stay overnight, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Like others have said, you have round-the-clock care from professionals who can help you if needed. You have better access to meds and services...and definitely much better pain meds! The first 24 hours after any surgery is critical, so I think it's a good idea to be at the hospital where the experts are, and they can stabilize you. I was poked and prodded and stuck with needles more in that 24 hours than I've ever been in my life, but it went by very quickly. Remember, this is a MAJOR surgery!
