I am 33yrs old and have been banded since 06/2007. My BMI was around 30, And I weighed 217 lbs with absolutely no comorbities. Insurance would not cover me for the lap band so I contacted Ready 4 a Change and went to Monterrey Mexico and self paid for my surgery. I decided on May 23rd to have it done and got a surgery date for June 6th! I don't regret my decision because I didn't have to go through all the frustration I've heard insurance making people go through. No psych Evals, no nutritionists, no 6 mo doctor supervised diet!

Dr. Ortiz is in Tijuana, Mexico just over the border from San Diego, CA.

obesitycontrolcenter is the name of his web-site. Do you have health insurance? With a BMI of 49.5, if you have insurance that covers weight loss surgery, you should have no problem qualifying for coverage.

Hello' date=' it's been a while since I've posted on this site, but I have a question or two and would like to know if anyone could answer them. I am 37 years old with a 34 bmi. I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol(but not real high). My question is..Can someone like me that has been on a diet since they were 14 be able to get the lalpband if I was self-paying? Also, do you have to have gone to weight watchers, Jenny craig or any of those sites? I haven't done any of those diets just because I've done everything else out there under the sun and seen friends on weight watchers that lose a couple of pounds and gain 10 more back and being on so many diets before with the same end result it's frustrating. In what research I have done so far on the lapband, it seems to have a higher success rate for people to lose and keep off.I'm not looking for an easy solution because I know the band is a tool and just as hard as any other type of weight loss solution but it just seems like it has a higher success rate.[/quote']

I recently went to the info session at NYU and the lowest BmI they will operate on s 30. Insurance will never pay for it with a bmi below 35 so the good news is you don't need to do the 6 months of supervised medical weight loss. Cost is $15k

I also have a BMI of 30. I want to be proactive and do it before my weight gets out of complete control. I have a consultation set for August 1st. The cost is around 15,000. I have Blue cross which would cover it if I were heavier. 5,000 dollars in Mexico seems like a steal, but is it safe? I just don't know about travelling to a third world country for surgery. Seems a little risky.

Its like saying "your not THAT fat". Well they are saying your fat. 40 pounds over weight is still considered obese and should be taken serious. i need to lose 60 pounds and am the same boat as you. Like you, I'd rather take prevenative measures now before the problem gets worse.

Your BMI needs to be at least 40 un order for u to get the band surgery done. And it does help as long as you have a place where to get ur fills done because if u don't then there is no point for u to waist ur money.

I had my surgery in Mexico for $4500. It was by Dr Cabrera in Tijuana. Medical Tourism company organized everything for me.

The hospital was a great experience. They were much nicer than any experience I've had at a hospital at home. Most of the staff speak English so it wasn't a big deal to communicate.

Hi

Lower BMI and no comorbids

I was banded in Monterray Mexico Sept 2012, My weight was 227lbs, It has been a struggle for me to get anymore weight off. My lowest weight was 185 this summer, but I have gained 5 lb since. Some day's I can eat, and eat and not feel full, other days I get stuck and vomit. I have had a slippage, but was told that it was since the surgery, my surgeon had a hard time getting the band in place because of a previous hernia repair. I live on heart burn medication and would be in serious pain without it. My band is a 4cc and im at 3.25, if I go over this fill amount I choke at night. This is the 1st time I have spoken out loud about this, Im wondering if anyone else has had these similar issues. Im not giving up!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
