jessyM 2 Posted October 3, 2011 does anyone else do this?! i take a bite of something. chew chew chew and without thinking - i will swallow. and immediately, as it's happening, know that it was too much to swallow at once. and then the need to purge ensues. i had surgery in MAY and i'm still totally struggling with - a) taking a small enough bite chewing said bite into mush c) swallowing d) waiting a sec/taking my time/not acting like my mouth is a turned on vacuum. is it just me? come on brain, THINK. EzekielsMommy 0 Posted October 4, 2011 It's harder to eat and chew slowly when youre super hungry!! I have a hard time eating in the morning...I dont eat at all until 12pm....i eat maybe two hard boiled eggs and a couple crackers...then when I get home from work (5pm) I AM STARVING so thats when I end up eating fast and boom..i throw up everything...I got my surgery in June and I'm still having a hard time..I havent really lost any weight either...about 11lbs..hey it's something right?? i have about 8.3 in my band.. NJGirl32 43 Posted October 4, 2011 I also have been struggling with this!! I get all the tell tale signs too-runny nose, hiccups, burp-you would think I would stop-I am learning though. I am also slowly learning to take a while to eat and chew. The minute I don't feel right I try to stop and even spit out anythingthat's still in my mouth. I have also found that when I am about to feel uneasy I walk around and even go up and down stairs to help move things along. I was sick on shrimp 3 days ago-so what did I eat today? Shrimp! But I took smal bites and only ate half-plus it took me a longtome to eat it. The secret really is not to wait until you are starving -plan snakcs and eat every 4 hours. I didn't have lunch today and when I came home I was really starving-probably ate too much but fortunately I was okay.

It's all part of the learning process. Our old habits were to "shovel" it in. So when we sit down and start eating we forget and start eating too fast between bites and too much per bite. But it does not take long to realize the mistake. My wife does not even ask anymore when I put the fork down and act as though I'm finished. Just have to wait 5 minutes for things to settle down (hopefully) before resuming.
plumpdude 8 Posted October 4, 2011 I tried to practice pre op and I was just down right horrible at it. Now almost 2 months post op I am a pro. I havent gotten stuck yet too. Its 96% habit now. I guess I just have that huge fear of swallowing something big so I always chew pretty good. Sometimes a semi small piece goes down and I worry but it passes through with no issue. Maybe I dont have that much of a fill yet for it to matter. Im at 5.4 in 10 cc band with one fill so far.
Doreenviv 2 Posted October 4, 2011 I'm right there with you, I too was banded in May. The other day I chewed a piece of meat and thought I chewed it enough when I swallowed it and bam!! It got stuck for 2 hours, no matter how hard I tried to get it back up I couldn't. After 2 hours I finally got it back up. Well, to me, THAT was a lesson learned and I will go that extra step to chew even longer. That was the most painful feeling I have ever gotten in my life. Good luck. Doreen does anyone else do this?!
