Pre Surgery weight loss puts my BMI <40

Recommended Posts

Hi I am new to the forums and I am wondering if anyone has every encountered an experience when their start weight is above the BMI >40 and the diet before surgery puts them in the "not covered" category. I have no major medical issues, except PCOS, GERD, Severe back pain and knee pain, and I am afraid after my pre surgical diet I will be under the covered weight limit. Maybe I should pack on the lbs before my consult?? What do you think?

My BMI was above 40 when I had my first doctor's visit. I just went back on friday for the surgeon visit and had lost down below 40 and asked the nurse if this disqualified me from the surgery. She said no because this loss counts towards the 10% that I need to lose before surgery. I hope this helps.

I have heard it both ways. Play it safe and stay at 40 BMI!

I have to stay >40 so I've been losing 1-2 lbs a mth and my clinic reminds me to not go <40. I will lose the most in my 5-6 mth, since I have only a 12lb window. So currently focusing on exercise and eating right. Good luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
