Hi my name is Sue I live in New York City. I began research on WLS September 2005. My BMI pre-surgery was 50.5 My highest BMI ever was 60.

I’ve kept that weight off for over 8 years but have been unable to maintain a BMI of under 50 for any period of time. Yup I’ve been on every diet that ever existed and then some …been successful on many but few for the long term.

One thing I have going for me is that I have consistently exercised for the past 8 years.

After much research and all the necessary pretesting I was very fortunate to be approved by my insurance company in one day. I guess the fact that I have a BMI over 50, sleep apnea, Hypothyroidism and High Cholesterol was enough to convince the insurance company that I needed this surgery.

I was banded this past Friday February 3, 2006. I have been very lucky to have had a wonderful experience thus far. My Surgical team and hospital care were truly outstanding.

I also had a hiatal hernia repair done at the same time ….( Big surprise …since it never showed up on any prior endoscopy……pretty miraculous since I’ve had pain for years that no gastroenterologist could find a reason for ….just something I learned to live with….)

So I guess I had 2 surgeries for the price of one .LOL.

Glad to be new member of LBT !!

I was banded the same day as you. Are you sore? I had a great experience as well, but I'm more sore than I expected. I'm back at work today, but I'm trying to sit as much as possible.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I was banded by Dr. Marina Kurian at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Wow, AngieO that’s amazing that you are already back at work. I also wanted to return to work right away but my physician insisted that I stay home for a week.

Boy was she right; I really do need this time to recover. I’m not sure if the additional surgery for the hernia repair is slowing my progress but I feel as if I was “Struck by a MAC Truck” LOL…..well, since my office has already called several time this morning I guess it’s almost as if I am at work….LOL.

I'm sure your hernia repair is adding to your soreness.

It sounds like your work can't live without you. They'll really appreciate you when you return!

Keep resting......it seems to get a little better every day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
