optimist1 0 Posted October 1, 2011 It has been two years now. The only time I actually lost weight is when I stay on liquids. I lost 45 pounds in the beginning on liquids and I have failed and put it all back on. I have seen a nutritiousness and she said that lap bands don't work. Did I do this for nothing. Why do others succeed and not me? Will insurance cover me having gastric bypass now which is what I wanted in the first place and I let my surgeon talk me out of it. Frustrated and getting heavier and unhealthier everyday. *sigh*
Jachut 487 Posted October 1, 2011 The lapband works well for most people when they work with it - but working with it isnt ALL down to you. You need proper restriction, which you dont mention..... have you had regular check ups and regular fills? Fills are essential, but you will find restriction wanes over time, so even after that first year or two, you'll often need a small top up once a year or so - I've found this even six years out. Others succeed because a) they have good restriction, they work with their band, c) they probably exercise regularly and d) their bands are functioning well. Is all that true for you? Even if you work and c) really well, without a) and d) results can be less than exciting. I saw my surgeon (or a doctor in his practice) every six weeks for the first six months and had a fill nearly every time. Then it stretched out to every three months, and then about once a year. I had my band unfilled this time last year for a big surgery and when I was able to refill again, I was going every six weeks again to get back to proper restriction. Have you had that sort of support and contact with your clinic? And if you have had that sort of medical back up and it still isnt working, some people are just plain unlucky and have these problems, others just dont do what they need to be doing to lose weight, either becuase they thought it was a magic fix and they shouldnt need to work at it or the band was just a plain bad choice for their particular eating issues and problems. Have you had any other problems like being too tight, vomiting, night time reflux, inability to eat solid foods?
Humming Bird 275 Posted October 1, 2011 Ditto to what Jaqui said. I'ts a shame that NUT told you the band doesn't work. I can tell you it does work. You already have the band, so try to make it work before you give up on it. Proper restriction has been the key to success for me. Go back to your lapband doc and get a fill or 2. Stick around this forum and read as much as you can to see how other bandsters do it.
winifred76 1 Posted October 1, 2011 I agree, The nutritionist should have given you an equally unbiased view of the gastric bypass/sleeve. I have a friend who lost quite easily after having it two 1/2 years ago. BUT she never changed her eating habits, is a complete carb addict who made no eating changes. She is struggling now to make the changes she should have made immediately because she is gaining the weight back. She is also now having to do a lot more Vitamin supplementation and can not convert to a lapband. I'm new to the lapband thing I admit, but the thing that I liked was that it was potentially reversable and I knew I would have to work on my eating habits and eating routine in addition to putitng the labband in. Why don't you go back to your lapband doctor and start with a small fill to see if that will help. And try to come out to the forums - the motivation and group suppot is phenominal Ditto to what Jaqui said. I'ts a shame that NUT told you the band doesn't work. I can tell you it does work. 54Shirley 105 Posted October 1, 2011 If you believe 1/2 of the Bullsh!t that the Employees tell you, then your sure to FAIL ! You need to talk to people that have been there, and done it. / People that have walked in your shoes. I have walked in your shoes do to bad aftercare. He deflated my Band, and I regained almost all my weight back. In January I tipped the scales at 328 I said this $h!t stops now. So I put myself on 1200 calories a day (it was hard !) and I began the search for a new surgeon. Fast Forward . I found one, and he excepted me. They looked at it under Fluorscope for Revision Surery. There was nothing wrong with it ???? So they put in a Acrylic in case of a leak, and filled me to my fill line. and I feel GREAT ! The Band does work ! But you have to limit yoursel on intake, and exercise. You know what is expected of you. Go to myfitnesspal.com and record all of your info there. It's FREE ! So no worry to you. You make a effort and this will work, No effort, and Bypass fails too. Make a apt. with your surgeon, and explain what's going on. If you get no satisfaction. Seek out another Dr.... I did ! ! and it worked.... You to can do this too. Were always here for help.
