GETTING MY FIRST FILL... FREAKED OUT!

Recommended Posts

I was scheduled to get my first fill on September 20th. I refused that fill because i felt i wasn't ready. They rescheduled me for This Monday and I'm completely freaked out. I'm still not sure if i'm ready for a fill. How do you know when you are ready for one? I feel like i just got comfortable eating a certain amount of portions and although i'm losing weight more slowly, i'm still losing. I'm just scared that if i get a fill, i'm going to have to start over with finding what portions and what foods work for me and i don't want to get sick or throw up while trying to figure it out. My surgeon also told me that he prefers i don't get a fill unless its absolutely necessary(he said the less fills you get, the less chance for complications) but the aftercare people keep scheduling me for a fill. Ugh, i do this back and forth all day. How did you guys know you were ready for a fill?

I understand how you are feeling!! I just got my first fill on Tuesday and I was scared as well. I lost about 3 lbs a week for the first two months then I started to plateau. I had two weeks where I stayed the same and that's when I knew I was ready. I went to the doc and explained how much I was eating and how guilty I felt for eating as much as I was. It wasn't bad food or even over-eating, just more than I was used to for post surgery meals, he said yup..you're ready! Two weeks later I had a fill. Since Tuesday, I have had some heartburn and had to start eating slower and chewing better, but I haven't vomited AT ALL since surgery. Once you start to realize what you need to do it's not hard to go back to those first two weeks post surgery. You'll be fine!! If you are still losing I would maybe wait..once you stop losing for two weeks or more I would say you're ready. The longer you go without losing the longer it takes to get it off!! Good luck!

Cancel your fill if you are losing weight and feel in control! Tell them you will call them to reschedule when you feel you need a fill or simply schedule an appointment for 3 weeks (you can alwasy cancel). Don't get the fill if you are doing good-my fill is tight and it does have it's problems.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
