These classes are quite valuable for your success as a Lap band patient.

Ask anyone who's gone through them. They contain diet, nutrition and medication

information and help guarantee your future with your surgery. Most of the classes

content is available elsewhere, but the classes help assure you know it when you're

discharged.

The more knowledge you have the better. Also so much of this battle is mental that the more mentally prepared you are the better.

I took 3 classes. The last one was today and my surgeryis on Sept. 30. Mine were nutrition and physical assestment (making numbers 1 and 2). Then the pre-op class (#3) which was informing of maintenace, health, diet, Vitamins, Protein, surgery expectations, what to do at home, labs, talking with the anesteciologist (<--spelled wrong), and a complete medical history.

THE CLASSES ARE GREAT IT INFORMS YOU ON WHAT TO EXPECT WHAT THE HOSPITAL STAY WILL BE LIKE AFTER MY BAND. THEY HAD ME UP EVERY TWO HOURS TO WALK SO YOU CAN GET THE GAS OUT JUST GO IN WITH A SUPER POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND YOU WILL BE JUST FINE.

My doctor has all of his patients go to a nutritionist and attend his monthly support group meetings. You actually learn more from going to the support group meetings cause you get first hand knowledge from other patients that are either going through the process or have already had the lap band done and all at different stages. The doctor and his staff also go to answer any questions you might have too. You can learn the good and bad things that other patients have done and leran from their mistakes. It helps to know what people mean when they talk about the stuck feeling you get when you eat the wrong food or too quickly. This forum also is a great tool for learn and knowledge. I have a IPhone and there is a free App called My Lap Band now available and it is great too. You can also go to the web page and get recipes and all kids of stuff on there too. I keep track of my weight on it and it has a spot to morph your picture to give you a idea of what you can look like. It's a great motivator.

My dr/clinic had several requirements before surgery. The first was the surgical evaluation/education meeting, the psychological evaluation, attend 1 meeting with the dietician/nutritionist, attend 1 support group meeting, and once my surgery had been scheduled I had to attend an all day education class where everything was reiterated and we met with the surgeon, a psychologist, an exercise trainer and the nutritionist. All were very informative and I am thankful they made me go through that because I knew exactly what was going to happen, what things to look for if I had a problem and exactly what I needed to do after surgery to be successful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
