October 3rd is my Big Day!

Recommended Posts

I'm getting banded on October 3rd and am really nervous. I went to meet the anesthesiologist yesterday and he mentioned that I might get chipped teeth from them putting down the breathing tube. He also said he had to mention that sometimes people are semi contious still during surgery. Hearing this makes me all that more nervous.

My doctor never put me on a pre op diet, I just started drinking the Protein Drinks every morning for the past week by myself.

My kids are asking me if I'm going to die. Holy crap! How do I reply to that?

Everyone's nervous going into this, it's a big step in your life. Five minutes after you're wheeled into the operating room,

you won't remember anything until you wake up in recovery. I've never heard of anyone waking up during surgery.

The intubation tube will cause a little discomfort after you wake, and it usually lasts a couple days, but isn't anything

major. The diet before and after was a bigger problem for me. You'll probably get tired of Protein drinks, but

you'll still drink them. My doctor told me to drink only Clear Liquids 24hr before surgery, nothing after midnight, and one week after. It kinda sucks

but you'll have to heal and that won't happen on steak and potatoes : > ).

October 3 is also my day. I am also anxious, but know the odds are that I'll be better off for doing this. I have survived so much in my life that I put this into the perspective that I'm going to be just fine. You can read on the internet or hear from friends of horror stories regarding this procedure. Ignore them. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you as we start this journey on the same day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
