water gets stuck, food doesnt?

Recommended Posts

Banded 5 weeks ago. Have had one small fill. My doc doesn't tell how many cc in a fill. Had to drink Water during my fill until it stuck. Anyway that was 8 days ago. Did the liquids for 24 hours, went to mushies and back on solid foods 6 days ago. I can eat a suprising amount of food without feeling full. I have to make myself stop eating for fear I will gain weight. Have not been full or uncomfortable at meals. However, water is getting stuck. Sometimes its after one sip, sometimes two or three. I have tried it at all temperatures (cold, room temp) and it doesnt seem to make a difference. It also doesnt matter when I drink..it still sits on my chest for a few moments before it finally funnels down. Its strange to me that food goes down fine but water gives me a problem. Has anyone else experinced this ?

Yep ! A lot of times some food is left in the band, and it goes unnoticed.

Now when you drink, you feel the Water getting stopped from the food in the band.

Then it will go down in a little time.

Hope that makes a little sense to you.

I have had that too on and off. I am not sure what it means. I can see if you are putting liquid on top of food but I can be completely empty in terms of eating and liquids still snag up on me.

But I have learned to use it to my advantage if I am in the mood to overeat. I

eat what I consider a reasonable portion but I want to eat more...I have a few sips of liquid and I am done! I cant eat more so it kind of works for me!

I have had Water feel like it's going down sideways too..

I always drink with my meals or it would be painful to try to eat..

The other morning after Breakfast, I must not have washed it all down, because

when I got to the Gym,and was working out, I took a swallow of Water, and the biggest BURP ! came out.

That was so embarrassing.. People are telling me O it's O.K. Honey, I have 2 sons.........

I'm saying NO, that's not quite what this is all about, and had to explain it.

So now when I leave. I have to make sure my pipe is open.

As in NEW PLUMBING !

I was at my surgeons support group meeting and one of the banded nurses mentioned that sometimes after a fill, Water can have trouble going down. The surgeon recommends adding crystal light which adds just enough weight to the water to help it go down. It's weird but I've found it works. :) I hope this helps!

I was told not to drink Water 2 hours before or 2 hours after a meal. Water can expand the stomach pouch making it easier to over eat. What i do now is a visalus Protein Shake for 2 meals a day and usually a bowl of chili, Soup or chowder for dinner. It is important to get about 60-70 grams of Protein a day and i cant seem to do that without the shakes. I have found that eating or drinking too fast can cause the problem you are having so if i eat slow and drink slow it seems to not be as bad. I've lost 80 pounds over the last year so i must be doing something right. Good luck!!

Hey girlie. I've been banded for almost 3 years now...and honestly this is considered normal for me. I never can drink liquids in the morning, and usually they aren't 'heavy' enough to go down without some food. I'm very tight in the morning anyway. So I usually just eat something semi mushi/easy to eat in the morning and liquids are fine...Been like this for me for as long as I can remember, and I'm not 'too tight'.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
