2 days banded - even sips of water BURN

Recommended Posts

I was banded 9/20. Most things are going well my incisions are a bit sore, but not too uncomfortable. I haven't had any nausea (except for the barium Fluid they had me drink for the swallow test - NASTY!). However, even when I take a sip of Water, it BURNS - feels like extremely intense heartburn. It hurt so bad to try to swallow the liquid pain killer my Dr. ordered for the hospital and post-hospital, I've opted to just go without. Anybody else have experience with this -- how long should it be before I can swallow pain-free? (I'm on clear liquid diet - just trying to get down water and diluted juice at this point.)

Hi, Lynn,

I am not qualified to say if it is normal or not, b ut would like to encourage you to check in with your surgeon's office before the weekend.

I hope you feel better soon. Keep sipping. All the best to you on your journey to good health.

Melinda

If it's in your throat, it's probably from the intubation device, and it'll go away in a few days but if it's behind your breastbone you probably should

contact your physician.

This sounds like something you definitely need to check with your physician about.

HI I WAS BANDED ON AUG 25 AND liquids ALSO BOTHERED ME, MY DOCTOR SAID IT WAS FROM THE TRAUMA OF SURGERY AND SWELLING. IT LASTED ABOUT 5 DAYS I FOUND THAT WARM LIQUIDS WENT DOWN MUCH EASIER. YOU SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO START ON YOUGART WHICH WENT DOWN VERY NICELY BUT BE SURE THERE ARE NO fruit PIECES. I ALSO ADD A TEASPOON OR SO OF UNFLAVORED Protein Powder TO THE YOUGART. AT THIS POINT I FORGET TO EAT AND DRINK BECAUSE I AM NOT HUNGRY AND food IS NO LONGER ON MY MIND .IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO GET YOUR Protein AND LIQUIDS AND BE SURE NOT TO GET DEHYDRATED. GOOD LUCK.

Hi. This happened to me as well. Then it became difficult for me to swallow anything. Did your surgeon put Fluid in the band when he placed it? my surgeon left 2 cc's in my band during surgery and I had so much post op swelling that I couldn't swallow. I went in the next day and he took the fluid out and I was immediately better. Sounds like you need to call your surgeon.

I was banded yesterday and it doesnt burn but when I drink or eat Jello my chest hurts. Like pressure type hurt. I dont know if Im gulping or what. I am calling my surgeon tomorrow. When i stand up it stops. I am hoping its just from trauma/swelling.

I had the same thing from the intubation. Drinking the liquid pain killer hurt so much I was literally crying - and I'm not a crybaby at all usually! Like you, I just opted to go without because I couldn't stand the pain of drinking it. It went away soon enough though :)

Well - thanks to all who answered my questions. I contacted my surgeon on Friday afternoon, and she had me come into the office. They removed 3.5 cc of saline from the band (so now I know for certain what it will feel like to have a fill injection). I immediately felt MUCH better. The burn and pressure behind my breastbone disappeared almost immediately. By the way - the fill was not too bad - less then having a blood test for certain, and having her remove Fluid from the port 4 days post surgery has to hurt more than later on, since I'm bruised and swollen at the port site.

Now, I am a bit apprehensive about my first appointment with fill (October 8). I'm hoping that the pressure and burn was only from the trama of surgery - and that this isn't how the actual band will feel when the fill is returned.

What a journey I have embarked upon. Now the hardest part - now that there is no pain - my brain keeps on telling me "it's OK -- just have a small bowl of scrambled eggs -- you'll do just fine." Post-op instructions are to remain on Clear Liquids for one week - then full liquids for another week. Hope my willpower will hang in there. There seems to be so many options on what to eat when with post-op. Some posts state that they have been allowed to eat "real" food prior to surgery - my Dr. allows only Protein shakes. Some speak of eating "soft" foods post-op. I'm thinking it's better to err on the conservative side, which I am certain is what my Dr. wants.

I return to work on Monday - hope that goes well.

With all the time, trouble and money you've spent on this journey, you certainly are strong enough to resist the pangs of of a little hunger so as not

to jeopardize your surgery before its had time to heal. Grit your teeth, eat a Popsicle and three weeks will be gone before you know it. It's not easy,

but really important things seldom are.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
