Post-op breakfast difficulties

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am now 6 days post op and feeling pretty good most of the time. Am I the only one who has more difficulty with Breakfast then the other meals...I have now moved on to cream Soups rather then broths and they go down fine however i tried really runny porridge as the book the surgeon gave me suggests and it did not go well, I had an incredible pain in my chest with pressure and tightening only to be followed up by me vomiting the porridge :( today I tried extra soggy rice krispies again as suggested by the post-op diet book and it was difficult to eat I only got down about a quarter of it and that with difficulty, again with pain and tightening although not as bad as with the porridge, and it stayed down, no vomiting, although I must say that even Water in the morning I feel it when it gets to the band(or where I can assume the band is placed) but the rest of the day no problem the soups go down well even pudding I have no problem with, is this normal or something I should contact my surgeon about? has anyone else experienced this or something similar? Please help...Thank you so much!!!

I'm 9 months post-op and still have trouble eating breakfast. I've been sticking to Protein Shakes, on occasion I can have eggs or oatmeal. I play it safe and stick to my shakes (not much of a breakfast person anyway). It's normal for the band to feel tighter at different times of the day by the way, so it's possible to always have trouble with breakfast. When I want to eat but don't feel like I can, I'll drink a little bit of something hot or eat some Soup to "open me up" . I'd say it seems 6 days post-op might be too soon for you to be eating anything but liquids like broth Soups, Jello and maybe applesauce. Even the soggy rice krispies could clump up and stick to itself making it hard to flow past the band. I started with mashed potatoes and egg salad when I got to my mushies stage (Doc suggested anything you could mash up easily with a fork for that stage). I didn't really start even creamy soups til about a week after surgery. books or suggestions may be good as a guide, but every BODY is different, you will learn what your body can handle over time. Be careful, you don't want to be vomiting at all let alone so soon after surgery when you're still healing. Take it slow, sip slowly and I'd suggest maybe drinking a hot berverage first thing in the morning, this usually helps me.

Good luck!

I've likewise only been banded a short while, but I'm really tired of sweet stuff, I want bacon and eggs and hash browns. No problem keeping stuff down, cream of wheat

and oatmeal just don't do it any more, maybe if they're cooked in beef broth, yuck. I guess I'm just going to have to wait. Guess my willpower isn't what I thought.

I guess I am an old bander but breakfast just doesnt go down. My band is just like my wedding ring - in the morning its super tight and at night its loose. I wish it was the other way around but I just have to struggle against the nigh-snacking urge!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
