Protein Drinks Stage 1

Recommended Posts

Marebeth, this recipe was given to me by my nutritionist for use during this time. She wants to keep carbs fairly low, but not to the extreme of Atkins @ the under 20. I am trying to keep my carbs under 50/55 per day and seem to be losing just fine. She stresses Protein more than carbs through the healing stage. And yes, I am on pureed foods this week. I had this particular shake yesterday, but with my scrambled egg, greek yogurt and other Protein Shake I met my protein but did not exceed my carbs.

As long as you keep losing its the main key. My dietitian said to keep the carbs as low as possible. I'm not doing Atkins, just have been on it several times and know it like the back of my hand. My doctor won't put me on pureed until after 2 weeks. Then 2 weeks of pureed, then 2 weeks of soft mashed and I get to go regular after that. Sounds like you are doing pretty awesome on your plan!

Nomrtz & Erika - In Re: Unjury and Dymatize ISO-100 - Where did you buy them? what size tub? and price?

I know you said the Unjury was $22 and I haven't seen it that cheap unless it's a smaller tub.

If you know of a good website to purchase Protein Powder please share!

I know www.VitaLady.com will let you purchase samples to try before you buy.

I bought it at a Vitamin Shoppe store in Mn. I am sure the brand can be found everywhere. I paid 21.99 but as a member I had a 20% discount coupon. I've researched & found that whey Protein is the best to use. I have talked to many people about the right one. The 32 grams comes because I used soymilk which has 7 grams. of protein. I use the chocolate but it also comes in vanilla & tropical deamsicle. I figure, if I need to drink this and insure I get enough protein, I will pay for it. One of the nurses told me her brother was not getting enough protein after his surgery and started to lose his hair.

Talk to your Dr.,the nurses and store employees. I started with 3 small pouches of each flavor to make sure it tasted good. the tub is 12 oz. making it 11 servings if you fill the scoop to the top.I don't always fill it to the top, I occasionally add a sm. banana or other fruit.< /p>

Can you tell us where you bought this Jay Robb Protein powder plus the price and size of the tub? I like that one scoop is 32g

I was at The Vitamin Shoppe this week and they have 2 brands - one is the Vitamin Shoppe brand and I can't remember the other - but they are on SALE for Buy One get one 50% off (hope I got this right). They had several flavors such as chocolate, French Vanilla, Banana Cream, Unflavored. I don't remember the price but it looked like they had 2 and 3 lb tubs. Now that we have a Protein Drink topic page, I will try to remember to get all the info.

If you see any SALES please POST - try to get the info, like the sizes, brand names, price and deal

Many start Stage 1 with Protein drinks ready for post surgery. Some good, some bad, some cheap, some pricey. Let's share info on Protein Drinks to help us all.

When you post about a Protein Drink and/or mix........Please include -

1) Brand Name and flavor

2) Size tub and price

3) Where you bought and if available online, please include the website.

4) Nutrition Info - amount of Protein grams per scoop, Calories, net Carbs

5) How you used the mix to make your drink/shake

Thank you!

Great idea! Also, in another forum I copied and pasted your KISS regimine to help make sure one gets all your protein/liquid in until I advance my diet. But I know despite not being so dependent on Protein shakes for sole nutrition that they will be an important part of my trying to continue to stay healthy, so thanks for the tip! (PS Is your doctor really mohammed ali?)

The brand is PRUE Protein.

Out of Breath - Doctors usually like to see a person loose 10% body weight before surgery. Also, the pre-surgery diet gets the body ready for the lap band, reduces the size of the liver when is very important during surgery because most of us have an enlarged liver. The more you do to prepare, the more you are ready for post surgery.

Victoria - What is the name brand of the Protein cans? Not sure if it the same ones but the dietitian told us not to use the Protein Shots because it is crummy protein. Not sure if they are the same as what you use. I would be interested in knowing and looking it up.

I think the sugar free pudding is a great idea. Since I'm still in Stage 1 - protein drinks only I haven't started adding puddings yet.

LOL, Yes Dr. Mohamed Ali is his name. Not the boxer! HAHA. I only knew him as Dr. Ali all this time, not knowing his first name. He's a gem and I really like UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and they are a "teaching" hospital too. I go on Wednesday for my 2 week post-op appt and get my staples out! Day of surgery I weighed 252 and my goal is to be 239 and it looks like I will be below that on Wednesday. I started my lap band journey 4 years ago at 302 but never had the surgery. I have no regrets and plan to enjoy every eating stage even though I hate pureed or soft mashed foods - I am planning to find things I like that are healthy. Think I will still keep the Protein drinks in my diet to insure I get my Protein counts.

1. Optimum Nutrition 100% whey Gold Standard- I'm loving the Double chocolate

2. 2 lbs- $21.99 from Amazon.com, subscribe & save is $18.69

3. amazon.com

4. per scoop- 24 g of Protein, 120 calories, 3g carb

5. I use a 8oz. of milk plus a scoop of powder. Right now I'm not on the preop diet yet, my nutritionist just suggested to start trying the drinks, so I'll add a 1/2 tbsp. of Peanut Butter and a few ice cubes to the blender. It is sooo good. I bought the Oster My Blend from Walmart. It's very easy because it blends right into the sports bottle and then you put on the lid and go. I can put everything in the dishwasher and it doesn't take up much space, which is great. I hate pulling out my big blender.

The berry is pretty good. Mixed with Water its more like a juice.

I am getting tired of the sweetness of some of them. Who would have thought, lol.

I bought sample sizes of quite a few! I go to a nutrition shop close to my doctors office and the people there are great

I tried Syntrax nectar in the peach flavor and mixed it with 8oz of water--Terrible. It didn't mix well and had a very strong flavor. My doctor only wants 100 % pure whey Protein isolate-no blends or from concentrated. It limits a lot and I found them to be more expensive.

I am trying Dymatize ISO-100 in Gourmet berry today for lunch, I will let you know how it is

I'm not a fan of the powders. I buy the cans of Pure Protein they come in chocolate, vanilla (don't like this one), Cookies n' creme and strawberry. They have 23grams of Protein, 1.5grams of fat, 6 carbs and 1gram of sugar. . I get them at Target, they're about $7-$9 (depending on store location) for a case of 4, they're a little pricey but they're convient, they also have them at Vitamin Shoppe. I have them for Breakfast everyday. I either drink them straight from the can or put them in the blender with ice and frozen fruit, sometimes I add milk or nonfat low sugar ice cream, they're pretty yummy.

I loved the pure protein and you can buy even more flavors on Amazon I got the chocolate Peanut Butter one which was great!!! I had to go on a trip and needed a powder so I tried the pure Protein Powder and it was grainy and gross. I went to GNC and the guy recommended the "GNC Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60" powder. I was skeptic at first but this stuff is AMAZING! and super low calorie. Dont be scared by the nutrional facts though it says its 280 calories but that is for 3 scoops and there is 20 grams of protein PER SCOOP!. That means that for 20 grams of protein its under 100 calories! just over 1 carb per scoop too! and it is really great with just Water and ice. It dissoves completed no funky aftertaste and really good too! I have tried the chocolate, vanila and strawberry and i like the chocolate the most (wasnt a big fan of the vanilla but i think i added too much water) They usually have sales but one bag full price will run you about 30 bucks for 21 scoops (400 grams of protein!) but if you get the GNC card you get 20% off on top of whatever sale they are running. They usually have a sale of buy one get one half so i think its a great deal. I keep a bag at work in my car and at home because its so easy!!

ENJOY!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
