Wow! You have been through a lot already. All I know to say is this..... I finally admitted to myself that I could not lose weight on my own after years of trying and failing. I also have diabetes and the complications have started to show. So yes, I would follow through with the surgery if it was me. Maybe you could postpone it until you are sure you are completely healed.

Just saw your post and it is remarkably like mine!

I was scheduled for banding on May 5, 2011, but landed in the ER on April 22 with a massive gall bladder attack and was admitted to the hospital. There were complications when I was operated on, and was in the hospital almost 8 days, and even readmitted three days later because of a high temperature. Needless to say, my banding was delayed.

Interestingly enough, I lost almost 15 lbs over the summer since my gallbladder surgery, and this made me rethink the banding. However, I decided to go ahead and was banded Sept 12. Reason I went ahead was that I realized two things:

1. Gallbladder problems were probably due to my obesity, and this probably won't change without banding,

2. Although I lost weight this summer because the stomach surgery affected my hunger, this was unlikely to continue. Also, it was clear that an "operation" could affect my appetite, and that was likely to happen with the banding. This turned out to be true.

So, give a good long time to heal, and then consider your situation. Most likely the reasons you wanted to go ahead won't have changed.

Well, complications do arise. I work at an specialty/emergency veterinary hospital and I know of at least 2 cases where the surgeons have had to go back in on a cholycystectomy (gall bladder removal) because of a leak. So it is a complication that can happen. So it sucks that you were one that had it happen, but it can happen.

As for your liver, well if you do a pre op diet to shrink your liver, hopefully that won't happen.

The decision to go forward is up to you, but if you are truly ready to change your life, go for it.

talk to your surgeon and see what he thinks. might be a good idea to postpone it for a month or so, just to let your body heal from the surgeries you have had. i had mine out 9 years ago, and on of my incisions from that surgery was reused, so i didn't have a new scar. that was awesome for me. :) hope you get better soon. i thought the gallbladder recovery was much rougher than the lapband recovery.

I'd take your doctors advice as to the timing of it, but if you've got a huge liver and have had gallbladder problems, its a pretty good bet that your obesity is behind it. These are clear signs of the effect obesity is having on your health and you can bet your bottom dollar that there's other problems brewing away. Your heart disease risk, your cancer risk, it'll all be well elevated. So I'd still definitely plan on doing the surgery, its just a matter of when. And you know that since your liver is already enlarged, that pre op diet is very very important to shrink it.

Its depressing but take it as a sign of how much good you are going to do for yourself and use it for motivation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
