I Need Advice for Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

The lady gave me a list of veggies, and said I needed to go low fat/low carbs to prepare for the surgery.

Problem is that she did not say when to start, nor did she tell me what low fat/low carb means to this doctor.

I will definitly be calling the office to ask, but I am curious about any input ya'll can help me with.

:hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry: :hungry:

I want to appreciate each large meal like it is the last, but I really need to know if this one really is the last.

My dr's office recommended:

2 weeks prior to surgery: diet of no more than 800 cal/day, at least 60 grams of protein/day. Basically, Protein shakes to get the Protein up there, and one salad of raw, non-starchy veges (lettuce, bell peppers, cucumbers, string Beans, etc.) with calorie-free Salad Dressing.< /p>

1 day before surgery: Clear liquids (sugar-free Jello, sugar-free popsicles, low-protein chicken broth) only.

I'm on the last day today (surgery tomorrow) and I've lost more than 10 lbs. so far :puke:. But boy, is today tough! My stomach is rumbling . . .

Good luck!

My doctor prescribed a 2 week, 1,000 cal liquid diet with at least 50g of Protein and no more than 35g of fat. They really didn't say anything to me about carbs. Also, I can have up to 2 c. of salad veggies/carrots/broccoli (with up to 2 tbsp of fat free dressing) plus low or nonfat broth, diet soda, sugar free Jello. I was having problems with dealing with the liquid diet (I wanted to CHEW), so the office's nutritionist told me I could have a 3oz can of tuna with the salad, or a serving of fat free cheese. She actually told me that if I needed an extra 100 cal, it was okay for a few days until I got used to the liquid diet.< /p>

Hope that helps...and yeah, get those answers from your MD's office! They should have told you all of this before.

Good luck!

I have no eating resitrictions until 2 days before surgery, at which time I go on liquids. There's a separate diet for people with diabetes, but for me it's 100% focus on sugar-free, fat-free Clear Liquids.< /p>

I'd have tro get the diet plan out to look at it, but I think there were a few options for milk & other non-clear liquids... however, I'm going to follow the first option.

So for me, Feb 26th would be the last day of eating "normal" (non-banded, non-preop).

Liquids continue for I think 3 days post-surgery, and then it's on to adding one new item from a selective list at a time, all "mushies".

As for calories, Protein, etc. -- I'd have to look, the paperwork is at home but I can followup if you're interested.

Thanks everyone, that really helps.

The lady at the doc's office did not really give me strict instructions, just low fat/low carb from now until the surgery. She said if I stick to chicken, fish, and veggies, I can't go wrong. She told my I was worrying myself too much, if the doc did not give me specific instructions, then I would be fine.

I do remember the doc telling me that my abdomen was very small. Maybe this is an indicator that my liver doesn't need to do a lot of shrinking?

Who knows? Thanks again for all of your help!!

The Protein is important - it is a build up to help you heal and maintain muscle mass. Be sure to get that Protein.< /p>

The doctor has to make his own judgement call. My thought though is the smaller you can make the liver, the more room the Doc. is going to have to work in.

I am quietly amused though at the varying 'recommendations' that we see here. If every doctor does the process the same... why the heck can't they agree on a 'standard' procedure??

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
