Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am scheduled for surgery Oct 4th. I started pre-op today with 1 shake for b'fast, 1 for lunch and just a lite dinner. Then next monday is the full liquid diet. Anyways back to my question...is it ok to drink coffee in the morning(I like it sweet) as long as I drink my Water the rest of the day?

Hello I drink coffee everyday. The only day I didn't was the day of surgery.

No reason not to drink coffee but I would use artificial sweetener.

I was told that coffee was fine but to make it Decaf, because the goal was to get rid of all caffeinated drinks, period. I like the taste of coffee and never used it for the caffeine anyway, so having decaf was what I already drank so it was no big deal. But I've heard that when you give up caffeine you can have horrible headaches and stuff so watch out. I don't drink caffeine and haven't in several years so that was never the issue for me. So, good luck and go have your decaf coffee!

The practice I go to told me no more than 16 oz of full, hi test coffee a day. No more IV drips for me B) !

that was for pre and post op.

but when in doubt, ask your doc or your nutritionist.

Thanks guys for your help!!! I'm not sure I can do the Decaf just yet as I need a little caffeine to curb the withdrawls. ALL I drank was Coke before today!!

My doc says no caffeine and I had my surgery on the 14th. I never drank coffee for the caffeine kick because I never got it but just didn't like the taste of straight Decaf. so I always drank 1/2 decaf 1/2 caffeine . Luckily since the surgery my taste buds must have changed because I actually enjoy straight decaf as long as it is from Dunkin Donuts. I am having terrible with drawl thou because of no caffeine and no artificial sweeteners from my diet coke. As of today my headache is there but not too bad. So glad to get those things out of my system I have been trying for years and couldn't do it amazing what you can do when forced !wink.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
