I have my appointment for my pre-op tests tomorrow and I was just wondering what tests I have to look forward to. I know they will do a standard blood test and probably an EKG but what else do they do?

Hello,

You will probably have to take to psychologist, dietician and do a sleep study. Depending on your insurance, you may have to talk to the dietician for six months.

Good luck!:D

Ive actually done all of that. My surgery is scheduled for Thursday. I was just wondering what tests they will do at the hospital prior to surgery. Will they do an Upper GI?

Did you have to see a Gastroenterologist as part of your pre-op consults? If so then they should've done the GI scope on you. Hospital pre-op testing varies, but i had, blood work, EKG, and chest xray.

Hey there,

For me I had (not in any particular order):

1 Consultation with Bariatric Coordinator

2 Visits with a dietician

1 Visit (so far) with the surgeon and nutritionist*

*There will be one more meeting this week, which I presume will start my 2 week pre-op diet (since my insurance finally approved me)

1 sleep study - to check for sleep apnea (strangest night of my life)

1 Follow-up to the sleep study

2 Visits to the Cardiologist (the first one had an EKG the second one was for an electrocardiogram)

1 Complete blood work panel

2 Attendances to a hospital sponsored support group (which I TOTALLY recommend to keep going to after surgery too)

1 Meeting with the anesthisiologist

Aetna also got a 2 year weight history from my doctor.

My pre-op testing included blood work, chest x-ray, and EKG. I also had to attend a 4 hr. meeting last week with a bariatric nurse and dietician concerning all aspects of the surgery itself and the diet progression. It was very informative. Good luck! Peg

Almost forgot - and a psych evalution. Thankfully I've been deemed sane enough for surgery!

I did my preop stuff friday at hospital. I did all my paperwork, blood work, mrsa test, met with a bariatric nurse for about 30 minutes who told me a bunch of stuff i already knew, got some freebee Vitamins and Protein Shakes, met with the anesthesiologist for about 15 minutes and was given a tour of the place. I had already had my pysch, ekg and blood work done. I am assuming you would know if you'd be getting a egd bc my prior surgeon (who i switched from) required that and i had to have someone drive me home.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
