Do You Drink Coffee After Lap Band Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

I have ADD and have been self medicating with coffee for years before the surgery we were told no caffeine because it causes stomach spasms that could impair healthy healing. I slowly weened myself and was caffeine free for about 3-4 months but I had to go back on ADD medicine to function at work. Every now and than il have a coffee or regular tea but I rarely have my regular at Starbucks (an iced venti quad skinny cinnamon dolce latte for 5 bucks)! Good luck!

I'm willing to give up many things to make a success of this Lap band, however my morning coffee isn't one of them. I usually only

drink two 6 oz cups, but I really need them to get started. On the other hand, I only need 52 additional ounces to make up my 64.

How come caffenine is a no no. I drink caffenine beverages but maybe I shouldn't can anyone tell me why they say not to? Maybe its in my doctor's lists of don't but I dont recall that. Thanks

My doctor was adament about no carbonated beverages, but only mentioned no caffeine at the beginning. I think it has something to do with stimulating hunger or something. Ironically, I seem to be drinking less coffee since being banded. But coffee consumption per se doesn't seem to affect my weight loss. But I do keep track of the calories from the cream/milk I add to the coffee.

As long as carb is controlled, my doc has no retrictions on coffee, carbonated drinks, alcohol, sex, and all the other stuff I can't live without! :)

I did plication and band together mid-July, and after a couple of weeks I started drinking coffee again. At first I had a lot of bloating (not from coffee) and the coffee necessarily did not make it any better, but after a month or so, I was good to go. I drink at least 3 cups a day. Most days one cup is Strbucks' Americano (basically two shot of espresso but I add half and half (almost 0 carb) and 1/2 packet sweet n low). No carb and very satisfying... If I want to splurge, I get a sugar free vanilla latte with soy milk (has less carb than non-fat regular milk). Even before my surgery I would never get the high carb drinks somehow. As mentioned, my doc is really big on no carb (only 30 gr. "incidental" daily), and fat, calories, etc. is fine as long as Protein intake is high... So every now and then I do add a bit of whipped cream (again almost 0 carb) on the top, which makes it even better... And I have been losing even better than planned, so I must be doing something right :o)

As for carbonated drinks, it took me a bit longer to be able to drink them after surgery and enjoy too. I can drink diet carbonated soda now just fine, but I pour over lots of ice and let it sit for a minute. I never drank non-diet soda before the surgery, so no compromises there. I definitely crave soda much less than before surgery somehow. Trying to stick to Water for the most part.

Good luck, and drink (coffee) to that!

I am very happy to hear that all of you are doing fine with coffee. My doctor recommends no caffeine until you have lost 75% of your excess weight! Of all of the changes, recommendations and restrictions, the only one that I am sure that I cannot adhere to is the no caffeine rule. Several years ago, I realized that everything I drank was caffeinated. (Coffee, tea and diet soda were my liquid staples) I knew that couldn't be healthy so I slowly changed my drinking habits. At the beginning of my band journey, I eliminated all carbonated liquids.

I love my coffee. I need my coffee to get my day started. Decaf just cut it. I have two cups during the week; one at home when I read the paper, check email and other online stuff, and one at work. On the weekends, I only have one cup.

I do plan to let my doctor and NUT know that I am continuing to have caffeinated coffee. (I'm pre-op, all testing complete, and insurance approved. Just waiting for a date.)

Its not about dehydration its about the caffeine irritating the pouch which can cause erosion. I drink Decaf and have done just fine on occassion I have regular coffee but dont make a daily habit of it. If I need caffeine I take diurex which also helps eliminate Water weight.

How about coffee after a fill? My Dr. is okay with 8 oz a day (once I got out a ways from surgery) but notes the major factor of dehydration-- everyting in moderation. But I got my second fill yesterday (7 months post op) and so they have us do 48 hrs Clear Liquids and 48 hrs mushies before returning to regular food. Looking back at my list of clear liquids Decaf coffee is on there, but just thinking I may need a cup of regular stuff to avoid a headache today. I have a little skim milk and splenda in it which are also okay no the clear liquid phase...any thoughts? I'm nervous it would be too rough on a just filled tummy....

I haven't had surgery, but I intend to have coffee for the rest of my life. Otherwise, I will not be a pleasant person!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
