Help, I am so confused :(

Recommended Posts

I originally posted this in the lap band fill forum by mistake. sorry for the cross post.

I have been doing a ton of research regarding the lap band and have read so many opposing opinions that I am totally confused. So I thought I would post here since this is a lap band forum.

I have been told by many in my research that the lap band wont work for me because I have a bmi of 50.4.

Several times I have been told that I am only setting myself up for disappoinment and that it will be a waste of money.

Is there anyone out there that started with a high bmi and has found the lap band an effective tool. I am not looking for a miracle, just for something that is less invasive than gastric bypass and will aid me in my Quest for a healthier life.

I am 60 years old and dont want to spend the rest of my life morbidly obese. As it stands now, I will be 65 before the loan for this surgery will be paid off. I dont want to go into this feeling I am wasting all that money.

Lynn

My BMI was even higher than yours. It was 65. Nobody ever told me the band wouldn't work for me. They told me it would come off slower, but I would still lose weight. I had surgery 6/20/11 and have lost 55 lbs. think it is working for me, and I'm sure it would work for you too. You have to do what is right for you. There are a lot of "band bashers" out there, but I think a lot of that is because people only hear about or remember the bad stuff. Good luck on your journey and I hope you make the best decision for you!

my was 52 back in April and is not 32 5 1/2 month later. It does work, I am down 107 with 37 left to go. People that say it can't be done are the ones that do not use their band as a tool to help them or the ones that do not have enough information on the band to understand it.

It can work, but you have to be willing to put in a LOT of hard work. I know that many doctors will not do the Lap Band on people with BMI's over 50 and instead opt for the Lap Sleeve.

I know it is a personal decision, but really...talk with your doctor and see what THEY recommend. They are the ones who know waht is best, not a bunch of people on a message board. What might work for us, might not be right for you. :)

Good luck!

My BMI was not as high as your's when I was banded (was around 40), but I see absolutely no reason banding would't work for u. Bear in mind it is not a quick fix, nor a magic device- like anything truly effective it takes work- BUT it is so worth it.

My bmi was over 50 when I had my surgery. I am also 55 years old. I have lost 100 lbs. Never thought I would lose that much. You just have to follow all of your Dr's instructions and it will work. Good luck to you on your journey.

I am always so angry when people are told that the band won't work because they have a high BMI. Why wouldn't it work? If you restrict what you consume, you're going to lose weight. In fact, most people with a high BMI lose weight faster than lose with less to lose. I keep wondering how many obese people get discouraged and give up the fight.

As for my story....I was 47 when I was banded. I started with a 56 BMI. The first year I lost 105 lbs and in 2 1/2 years, I lost 175. For the record, I didn't eat perfectly or exercise all day every day. I just ate normally and exercised 3 times a week.

My BMI and age were both 48. Now I'm 51 and my BMI is 26!

I started with a BMI of 60. Lost almost 160 pounds, now have a BMI just under 35. I was always encouraged that the band would be a great tool for me, and so far so good! The band will work if you work it! :)

wow ! Thanks for all the encouragement. You have all certainly put my mind at ease. I think I have done just about all the research I need to now and will concentrate on my consultations this week.

No need for me to go on to any other site to ask questions or read horror stories. Thank you for this forum . It is both helpful and informative and I plan on participating on here for a very long time.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
