Medication and Health after surgery

Recommended Posts

I've gone thru a year of weight management and now I'm only a few steps away from having surgery, I grow more concerned with my decision to have lap band to rid me my medical problems. I have PCOS, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre diabetic, knee and back pain and sleep apnea. I've been told my best surgery option would be gastric sleeve or bypass and the lap band might work for me but time will tell. How many of you had this told to you and what was the outcome? Did your medical problems go away?

I will not do anything other than the band. I do not want the malabsorption issues that can come with the sleeve or RNY. I would just continue to try to lose weight on the diet that I am on pre-op. But everyone has to decide for themselves. My doctor had the lap band surgery himself and lost between 70 and 80 pounds himself over a two year span, had many of the same issues you list and is off of most of his meds. I have many of the same issues you do with the exception of PCOS and I look forward to getting off most of the meds, if for no other reason than the cost involved. I would be thrilled to get rid of the CPAP machine that I have used for close to ten years although my sleep specialist said that I would probably have to keep it due to a small uvula; but did say it would be at a reduced pressure. That I can live with....It is important that you work with a PCP on the med issues. My surgeon said I must have an appt within two weeks of my surgery with her. All the best to you,

Melinda

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
