Protein - How MuCH and does it cause GAS?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I was banded a little over a week ago. I was told to make sure that I try and get at least 60 grams of Protein a day, and to primarily do this with the Protein Shakes. I find that the protein shakes are giving me a LOT of gas, which in turns is causing other issues like intense shoulder and neck pain. Is there any other ideas on how to get all this protein in? I am only on pureed foods, but I did notice that 1/2 cup of cottage cheese has about 15 grams of protein in it. I guess I could be eating that all day long. Does anyone else have any ideas for me? Is anyone else finding that the protein shakes are causing issues too? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

mylanta gas chewables saved my life. the Protein Shakes gave me gas right after the surgery, but when i started solid foods, not near as much. also, stay away from straws, makes the gas worse. cottage cheese is a good soft food, lots of Protein too. but not something all the time when you get released for solid food, as it is considered a slider food. alot of the creamy Soups have protein in them, so i add milk and cheese to add to the protein.

try making your shakes with Water or soy milk instead of regular milk. Also, if you were very recently banded, just know that I was way gassier than normal for the first couple of months. It did slow down... eventually.

I worry about getting enough Protein too and my doc. told me I could add cottage cheese at week 1 post op (which was today!)

I am not much for cottage cheese, but read on here that someone blended it in with the creamy soup--I tried that today, and the Soup was delicious and filling!

No noticeable increase in gas output yet either, LOL rolleyes.gif

Well interesting idea. I never though of adding the cottage cheese to the Soups and blending them together. I might do that tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice. B)

Greek yogurt has a good amount of Protein too. You could try that.

Protein shakes and bars give me gas - and horrible, offensive gas at that. I bloat up, get really rumbly and couldnt possibly be in an enclosed space like at the movies!

I just avoid them. They are not necessary at any rate, I have managed perfectly well for six years, lost a lot of weight, kept it off and am not "skinny fat" like the so called experts say you will be without mega Protein. I just eat normal food! They are expensive, not necessary and if you dont even like them, or they cause you digestive distress, dont drink em.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
