Group Health Cooperative Insurance experience??

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new to the forum and just starting the process of being considered for the surgery with my insurance. I was wondering if anyone has GHC in WA and could maybe give me some insight as to how their approval, or disapproval, went and what the considerations are. I have called the insurance company twice, but they keep telling me I have to talk to the doctors. Anyone have any tips that have worked with this insurance?

I would call back and ask to speak to a manager if they do not divulge information. Also, ask for a benefits book through your human resources. Another option might be to google it.

Good luck and welcome to our forum,

Melinda

Since there aren't a lot of people on here to seem to have dealt with ghc in WA, I guess I'll share my experience so far. I received approval for the bariatric surgery case management program. I have an intake interview with the nurse (phone interview) on Tuesday. I have received a check-list which I need to complete (I think within 3 months) which includes enrolling in Accomplish, completing the pre-surgery testing, talk to my pcp about contraception, and attending weight loss support groups through ghc. I will get more answers on Tuesday as to which tests I have to have done and when those will be done. I received information in the mail today about Accomplish, which is their pre & post weight loss program/nutrition program. Everything with Accomplish is done over the phone which is nice since I live an hour away from the clinic, but feels a little impersonal. Oh well. I am ready and willing to do whatever it is they require to get approved for the surgery. I am trying to stay positive and keep all the steps straight in my head. I am assuming that after I talk to the nurse Tuesday I will have a better idea of what to expect. I will keep an update here in case anyone else uses this insurance and has questions. I should point out that I have PEBB GHC.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
