I'm scheduled to get the Lapband Monday and was wondering if anyone had the procedure that has been called "modified plication" where a part of the

stomach is stitched over the band? I ride horses and stuff and am concerned about band slippage.

It is standard procedure to stitch a part of the stomach over the band to stop it slipping. As to the plication as far as I am aware that is another procedure where they sort of fold the stomach and staple it to make it smaller. So it is like getting a sleeve except they don't remove any of your stomach. It is supposedly reversible but I would think that would be hard to do without any damage having occured as I am sure scar tissue would form at the points where the stomach is folded. Sometimes the plication is performed in addition to a banding.

So do you know which procedure you are actually getting?

I just got the band along with plication on August 31. Elcee is right - the plication is an optional procedure where they fold the stomach in on itself and stitch it in place to form a sleeve-like shape. According to my fabulous doc, this does help with band slippage, but most people who opt for it do so because the weight tends to come off faster (results more similar to gastric bypass.). He said it's unknown at this point whether the plication along with the band will result in greater weight loss over time. It was an additional $1500 for me to add the plication and I'm self-pay so I figured while he's in there let's go for it! I have read about some patients who go in for band revision and add the plication so I thought I'd do it all at once. No problems so far but I'm just getting started (banded just a week ago.). I'm glad I did it.

I got the same on aug 15th and so far I feel great and I only have 2-3cc in band. I get full on a really small meal. About 4-6 oz. Im not even hungry most of the time and I stuggle to fit in 900 calories per day with Protein shake supplements since im still on soft foods.

I had my surgery on August 11 and had the plication also (stomach folded in) and I feel great! I am so glad my doc asked me about adding it. He put 4 cc's fill in my band on surgery day and that along with the plication, I have not been hungry at all. I amd eating very little and not wanting more. The weight is dropping fast and I am loving life. I lost 6 pounds this week and I only weigh 211 now. Most ppl at that size dont lose that much that quickly. I am 4 weeks out and feeling pretty normal and I do not regret it one bit!

Hello,

I had my Lapband with Gastric Plication done on April 11 ,2011. I don't think this is the same procedure that you are referring to though, but at least very similar. I feel that I have lost a lot of weight with it but mostly in the first three months after that it is hard work from there. But I do feel more restriction sometimes because of it. I have 3.5 cc band fill and did not get my first one until the end of May. I lost 30 lbs the first month after the surgery with out a fill. So it is pretty successful.

Goodluck with Everything.

Well, my doctor said he was going to fold a good part of my stomach over the band to make weight loss faster and prevent band slippage (sounds awful).

He called it "modified plication". This is at a Center of Excellence hospital and my doctor has been called "one of the best".

I'll find out more about it and let you know.

Corrigan, good luck with your proceedure. I had lapband with Plication on 7/7/11. They did fold my stomach in and stitch it up (making it more like a banana rather than a football in size). I am doing fantastic - down 481/2 pounds since surgery. I was told this has not been FDA approved yet and is still in the trial stage - many doctors cannot perform this yet so if you have a doc that does - go for it. I was hesitant at first but knew at my age (60) that I was only going under the knife once so make it count...I understand both the lapband and the plication are reversable but you can keep it forever. I have had 2 fills and my band has 3.5 ccs in it (10 cc band). Good luck on whatever you decide is best for you and happy weight loss....

Well, It's all over and couldn't have gone better. No pain except a very little around the port. My surgeon calls it "Modified Plication and a sizable portion of the

stomach is folded over the band and deadens a portion of the sensors responsible for hunger.
