5 year dilemma

Recommended Posts

I am have a dilemma to ask all banders who have are 5 years or more post op....Is it normal that after you loose the majority of your weight that you gain some back? Had my banding in 2006. Started at 320 and made it to 165...However, it was almost too much. I got sick and in the last year have gone up to my current weight of 190...Have had numerous fills over the years and Im not sure I want another one.

I also havent been exercising like i used to or should be. I find myself not being too motivated and dont know how to get myself back on track...

Has anyone else been in this situation? and if so how did you resolve it?

LapBand was the best thing I ever did for myself...Iam healthier and have a better life. But I dont want to feel like Im doing something to jepordize my accomplishment.

Please send me any words of wisdom......

Well, I havent ever regained weight - I've not given up the exercise and I believe that's the secret. I continue to challenge myself, change it up and work really really hard. I will never stop doing that.

However, I know what you mean about motivation dropping off, I dont have the same focus I had, but then in lots of ways that's good, eating has taken a back seat in my life, like for normal people! I do keep in touch with my clinic and have had a small fill about once a year since year 3 - I'm six years out. I need to keep that fill where it is, or I do notice over time I eat more/faster.

Its just about staying focussed on it, not as much as we were in the early phase, but dont just leave it in there and forget about it. Maintaining your weight involves keeping organised and sensible about what you eat and continuing to exercise. And there's no secret to getting that back, you just have to do it.

Thank you so much for taking the time and responding...Wasnt really sure that my thought process was on the right track. Have considering a fill, havent had one in quite some time, and was concerned that it was all in my head... I have noticed that i have a tendency to eat fast and am hungry more often. Than not eat filling foods....And I have slacked considerably on the exercise....Anyway, youve given me the motivation I needed to get a fill and refocus to what I know that has gotten me to where I am today...So again thanks...Ill check back later. Take care..

Hi,

I got my band in Dec 2005 and steadily lost weight. I was at my lowest weight during the summer of 2009. (almost 4 years) at that point I felt great but everyone said I looked too thin. I noticed that I was losing muscle tone too. I changed a few things, mainly adding back in more Protein. I gained 25 pounds. I have tried to lose it but find it difficult. I have found that my body as a weight that I stay at no matter what I eat (given what we can eat). During this full time I did not do steady exercise but am an active person. What I have noticed is that I have to focus on Vitamins, minerals and Protein in order to maintain energy and be able to maintain muscle tone. My body was using the muscles I had. Noticed that while I'd weight less (or the same) my size was getting bigger due to less muscles. I did not like this and feel it is because of the limited food. I have added better high Protein drinks and Vitamin supplements to change this and find I feel better. I also had my thyroid checked, (lack of energy is a sign) and had an issue. I am now adding some basic exercises to rebuild and tone muscles. I really feel that our systems can get really out of wack and feel awful when not getting what it needs. And if were not able to get it through food that we need a supplement. Hope this helps some. -- Isabell

Boy you sure nailed it....this is exactly how ive been feeling. Never thought it had anything to do with muscle tone...I had started my lapband journey at 317. Over time got all the way to 165...However, like you I was told I looked too thin and was stooping. We it wasnt so bad when I put on 10lbs. But now its more than that and I feel uncomfortable not because of the weight its how "flubby" I feel. So I believe you are right because I had decreased the amount of exercize I was doing even I too am an active person. And I tire easily. So I am truelly grateful for you insight. I believe I can now have a new approach to my situtation.

As usual can always rely on a bander to get you thru....Thanks again

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
