My surgery is in 10 days--I'm so nervous!

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

My name is Rebecca and I am getting ready for my lapband. I was part of 1800GETTHIN but I got lucky enough to get Dr. McKeen as my surgeon. He told me I will feel nauseous for the first few days and I am worried about that. How will I know what is normal? How much pain will I be in? Also, I take Vicodin for bad headaches as needed and he told me I can just take that after surgery for pain. Will I be able to swallow a pill?

My surgery is Sept 14 so I can't answer some of these questions but I do know that we have to crush pills or take liquid form. My doc told me to call pharmacist to ask what can be crushed. Good luck to you!

I didn't feel nauseous because I had an anti- nasea patch behind my ear for 5 days. Ask for one. I also took Vicodin, just get a pill crusher from the hospital staff and use that to crush your meds. I'm afraid to swallow pills yet. Had my surgery 16 days ago. Don't worry, the first week is a blur, mostly getting over anesthesia. You'll do great!

I was banded 16 days ago also. I had no nausea whatsoever. My doc gave me a prescription in case I experienced nausea but i never had to use it. The pain from the surgery itself was minimal to me. The worst part was the chest pressure from the gas. It felt like severe indigestion but walking helped a lot with that. It took about a week to really feel normal , but it really wasnt anything that wasnt tolerable.

Good luck to you!

I had no pain, including the incision sites, except for the gas pain in my left shoulder. If you walk around it starts to break up and you feel better. I didn't have any other issues that hurt. I did get winded very easily the fist week post-op, Walking more than 1.5 miles at one time was out of the question, lol.

Hi, I am 4 days post op...no nausea at all.. just bad gas pain in and around left shoulder and back, but walking does help. I am also starting to get a little constipated (no BM's in 4 days) I was prescribed tylenol with codeine, and had to take a few for the shoulder pain. I was able to break them in half and swallow them. Vicodin's are pretty big...so you may have to crush them completely. First night after surgery was hell, guess thats why most have you stay in hospital overnight, but has gotten much better every day. Good Luck!

This is my 2nd day and I'm in so much pain. The gas is killing me!! Seriously. I've been trying to walk around my house but every drink I take makes me feel like my stomach is gonna explode. No nausea just pain around my diaphragm. If it wasn't for this site I would be clueless. My dr. Didn't say anything about this. My incision spots don't hurt. No bm and no appetite. I feel so weak. I don't wanna be a downer but everyone made it seem not that bad. Brace yourself!

I had no nausea. I'm 5 weeks out from surgery and sometimes I get nauseated when I'm very hungry and it's time to eat... But nothing that would make me throw up. Everyone is different though. My gas pains were fairly severe... But most people's aren't. My incision sites never hurt. I did have port pain... It was difficult to get up and change positions but you'll adjust quickly. I was able to take my pills. They had me take them in the hospital. I just split them in half. And I was taking percacet(sp?) which are HUGE.

You'll be fine. Try not to be so nervous... It will be here and over with before you know it :-)

I'm 4 days post op and I have to say I haven't experienced terrible pain. Of course right after surgery in the recovery room I was hurting but they gave me Morphine and put me on a Morphine pump and I was fine. I was out of bed a few hours after surgery walking around. The worst pain is the gas!! Keep walking!! I haven't taken any pain meds since I left the hospital, so I'm happy about that. I felt some nausea in the hospital but they gave me a shot of Zofran and I was fine. They said it was from the anesthesia. No nausea since I have been home! Don't be nervous, you have all of us here for support! It hasn't been bad at all!! I'm so glad that I did it! Now I hope to see the scale move!

Good luck to all of you with upcoming surgery dates!!

Hi! I wasn't nauseus after surgery -- I just had a bit of pain in my shoulder from the gas. It was a LOT less than I expected. If you want, you can click on my blog link, go to the beginning of the blog and read what I wrote about it, the surgery experience, and recovery while it was happening. Honestly, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

As for the pills, you'll probably need to crush them before swallowing. I don't think you can swallow them whole -- but ask your doctor.

If you haven't done it yet, take your measurements and a bunch of "before" photos! You will DEFINITELY want them later on! Also, if you need something to do while you're recovering at home, you can "size" your closet -- group all the like sizes together so that you don't miss wearing clothes that you like as you get back into the different sizes in your closet.

Best wishes for your success,

Catherine

dont be scared. I'm day 6 and I feel a lot better. The gas is still here, but I am at work and trying to walk as much as possible. Last night I had a decent nights sleep. Only woke up twice with minor gas pains. you can do this!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
