alcohol on the band?

I'm not a big drinker but the beverage I do drink has 65grams of carbs. My question is,is it safe to drink when I have the band? (Keep in mind I only drink one a week)

I am not a medical professional but as far as what I know is... Alcohol is high in calories so we have to take that into consideration..But anything carbonated such as beer or champagne could be bad.

Personally I don't think it will hurt to have a drink from time to time. I haven't drank yet but have talked to others that have drank since being banded and they are fine. I have heard a glass of wine is good for the heart. There is even a section in the papers I was given from the office that says in studies drinkers have a higher success weight of losing and keeping the weight off. I would just be careful with the empty calories... Tabby

I drink wine about once or twice a week and don't have any problems. The tradeoff is slower weight loss, at least for me.

As the others have said....it will slow your weight loss...so many empty calories, but it's not going to hurt you otherwise. I drink once a week and have no problems. I just stay away from carbonated stuff.

The concern I think is the empty calories and the carbs. 65 carbs is a lot. I swear by a low carb diet. I lost 107 pounds in 10 months following a lowcarb/lowfat/high protien diet. If you are going to have a drink or 2, I would have something much lower in carbs, say a glass of wine. As already said beer and champagne are out due to the carbonation. Just my humble opinion. Take Care.

I too agree about the carbs, and tend to stick to low carb mixers (there are alot more than there used to be) and also will use crystal light with my liquor. I am a drinker. I am not ashamed to say it, however, I will agree with the lot...it slows your weightloss, it also lowers inhibitions allowing you to snack and eat without thinking. DON'T FORGET also that you will feel the effects ALOT FASTER than before. That being said, Have fun, have a drink. Or two. :) Just remember everyones advice when you step on the scale and are a little discouraged. My humle opinion too :)

I had a glass of wine last night...it was 110 cal. I don't drink often, but I do have to admit, the first time I did it affected me after 2 drinks, not fun. So, be cautious with intake, calories, and carbs. And drink extra water!

Most liquors have zero carb... Google the name of the liquor + nutrition. My doctor says as long as there's very little to no carb, drinking in moderation is just fine... 65 g of carbs is too much in my *humble* opinion....

I drank socially before I was banded...I could drink now but as others have said its just empty calories. There are times I will have a skinnygirl Margarita or Citron and Water w/splash of Cranberry and a lime....but that's it..for me to trade a drink for not losing that day just isn't worth it...I have come too far!

I have read that after being banded alcohol hits you harder than it did before so be careful.My surgeon's office recommended trying a first drink at home to see how it effects you before doing any public drinking.Well also alcohol could hit you harder after being banded becasue as your weight goes down your tolerence level will too-thinner people are ""cheap drunks'' and can get really buzzed on less alocohol.

Had my first fill last week and had 3 glasses of wine on Friday night, got very drunk even though it was over maybe 4 hours and with loads of ice. I would have had no effects on this amount before fill. I am thinking twice about doing it again! Woke up with a massive headache!!! Lol. Just be careful, we all need to let our hair down now and again!

You probably have gotten more replies than you wanted, but just for information, a 5 0z glass of fairly dry wine has 2 to5 carbs and 100 to 125 calories.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
