Hello........... 4 days Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone..... Just signed up today and wanted to introduce myself.... I'm Steven from Riverside, CA and just had surgery this week..... below is taken from the "About Me" section..

I've always been a very physically active but overweight person. I started putting on the weight in 7th grade with an 11th grade peak of around 285. I work out regularly but I've never really been able to drop much below 250. Due to hypertension and 38BMI, insurance approved me and I had surgery on 8/22/11. The day before surgery, I weighed in at 258.8.

So far post op has been pretty manageable. Started walking quickly and hit my breathing targets before leaving the recovery room. I am generally a quick healer from past surgeries, so maybe that is helping a bit. Biggest issue post op is the painful gas and bloating, but 1 gas-x ultra (twice daily) and walking about 1-2 miles through the day has helped dramatically. I was able to walk 1.5 miles straight by Day 3 and probably could have gone much further but the pain in my toe from my gout kicked in....... I'm keeping my walks to a 1/3 mile at a time until the gout inflammation subsides.

Surgery was Monday, Aug 22, and as of posting this, I am down about 11lbs. I've yet to really feel fatigued and believe I am getting sufficient liquids, but I do need to increase my Protein. I believe I have only been hitting about 50-70 grams, but my target is about 125-150, because I do not want to lose the strength that I went into surgery with.

Compared to my sister who had Bypass, my recovery has been a pale comparison to hers. I NEED to make sure that I do not get too confident and start eating foods that I shouldnt just yet..... Like I said, I recover quick and have always sped up my recoveries of past surgeries (major knee/shoulder surgeries)..... while that rehab at times was ok to push, this rehab scares me a bit more......

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
