What is the big deal about drinking while eating?

Recommended Posts

I read on lots of post about eating and drinking. And also read in my post op packet not to drink while you are eating. But I don't know why? What is so important that one should not do this?

If you drink while you eat the beverage pushes the food through the band faster which delays restriction causing you to eat more.

The whole point is to let the food sit in your pouch to make u feel fuller sooner . If you are washing it through the pouch , u will keep eating and not feel the restriction of being full.

I watched a really good you tube clip the other day that demonstrated why really well. Will try to find and post it.

If I drink while I'm eating, I throw up.

I found that if I'm eating a fixed portion size, drinking with the meal was irrelevant. I know when the food is gone, I'm done eating till the next scheduled meal time. So I drink with my meals, and have been doing so since i first went back on solids after my surgery. I found zero conflict or problem doing so, and I'm able to swallow food normally without problems.

The PA who does my fills says there is a lot of recent data about the drinking with meals topic that has provided conflicting evidence about it. He says my weight loss has been so "textbook," that if I want to drink with my meals, to go ahead and drink. This is yet another reason to figure out what works for you, and follow your individual plan. With the band, one size definitely does not fit all.

I agree, Dave. I'm going to eat what I'm going to eat whether I drink with it or not. But I think that you and I may be exceptions.

Found the link. I think this gives a really good visual.

For some people maybe drinking with meals doesn't affect how soon they get hungry afterwards , either that or they have the will power to only eat what they are supposed to and then not eat again till the next meal. But for those of you who are struggling you may want to watch this and then start following this rule. Lack of success may be due to some as simple as not following what for many is a basic rule.

I also can't physically drink after eating or I throw everything up. I have to wait for at least an hour - most of the time more than an hour. So I can't wash anything thru too soon. I can drink up until I put that first bite of food into my mouth, but after that, it's a no go. I've read that this is called the "cork effect" - that the food makes a cork in my esophagus and when I add liquid, it comes back up. I haven't read too many people that this happens to. It really sucks when I eat spicy foods!

I always drink with my meals. I still figure my meals out so they are between 800-1200 calories for the day. Then I have what I planned on, and drink Water with it. I am fine with it, and my surgeon told me if it works for you go for it. So I still eat that way, and again their is no problem. I also stay full.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
