I'm scheduled to have my surgery on september 13th. I am 18 years old and I am very excited to get the lap band. But I am having doubts. I do not want to feel a lot of pain and I'm not looking forward to the gas or shoulder pains people have been talking about. I'm really nervous about Hair loss as well. And I don't know how ill be able to adapt to new eatting habits. So my question to people who have been banded, will it be worth it in the end?

So so worth it. And for what its worth, I never had gas pains or shoulder pains and I never lost any hair either.

The operation is a piece of cake, its a very small, safe procedure, without a lot of pain afterwards. I got home from the hospital the next morning and went for a walk.

Most of the pain I experience was right after waking up from the procedure. The gas pain was minimal too. Easiest surgery I have had! And so worth it!!

Eating is a challenge at times but not so bad either.

Nine months out and never lost any hair. Also the gas pains were very minimal and were gone within a day or two. Everyone is different so maybe yours won't be a bad experience at all, even if it is a bit painful it is WORTH IT in the end.

It is absolutely worth it. The pain is minimal and the Hair loss, if you experience it, is temporary and grows back. The band helps adapting to the new habits pretty easy. I wish this had been available when I was 18. My life would have been so much different without carrying all the weight around as long as I did. Good luck to you. You are making the right decision!

I agree with everything everyone has said and like Cindy...I wish this had been available when I was 18 and I had been smarter enough to do it.

Exactly right ! If this would have been around when I was 18. I would still have my original Knees, not TITANIUM, I would have loved to been called by my regular name, not here comes Fat Shirley... That stuff gets to you after a while, and I am sure you have your own tale to tell.

But, it, is,,, O So Worth It ! Would do this again ! The pain is not all that bad, and they give you Medicine for the Pain. (I really didn't even feel that sore !!! ) Gas, again you do walking, and if you have it, it goes away, and some people use these Gas Strips that you can buy.

hair Loss: That really doesn't happen, unless you let your Protein get low, and you will be drinking shakes that are loaded with Protein, plus you add up the protein, and calories in your Daily Logging. As long as you stay between 60-80Grams of protein a day, your fine.

This is a piece of Cake ! Once you learn that a little bit of food fills you up compared to a lot of food before.... You will go far!

Shirley.

Also check out myfitnesspal.com that is one of a lot of sites where you can do your logging at, and view other peoples Diary like what they ate today ! That will give you some ideas. It's free to join and a lot of us are there.

I am Losingintime on that site.

Ah man! If I would have done this at 18 my life would be different now! I may have not avoided dating so much and going out to have fun. I may even be married by now and have kids....oh their are so many what ifs I would have not been so big for the last 15 years of my life! So I guess what I am trying to say is for me yes it's worth it! I was 280 somthing at 18 and by the time I was 28 I was 394 so the band would have stopped be from going into the 300's.

I had my surgery on NOv 2010, and it has been worth it! about the shoulder pain, it only last about 2 days or so, and the pain can be calmed with heating pads, by walking or even with Gas X Strips. Its totally normal since they inflate our bodies with natural gas to move the rest of the organs out of the way during surgery. U can check out my Facebook if you have any questions. www.facebook.com/kfrancolapband

I do Gardening when necessary like planting, weeding, scratching up the ground, harvesting, ripping everything out, or cutting it down, then clean up my beds for the spring.

Then I help with lawn work, shovel snow, snowmobile.

I walk 3-4 times a week.

Hope that gives a idea.

Shirley.

I'm almost 2 weeks out and had no shoulder pain, no gas pain and no regrets! I asked about the hair falling out and my dr said that is usually with the sleeve. So far it's been great! Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
