How soon can I return to work after Lap Band?

Recommended Posts

Hi friends,

I was wondering what I can expect after surgery. I going to be having it on a Thursday and was wondering when I can go back to work. I have a desk job so I dont do much. I can do the short term disability for 8 work days off or just use my sick days.... any advice? thanks

The way I was feeling I sent my husband back to work 3 days after my surgery and took care of my kids 1 1/2 and 3 at the time. He had taken off 2 week of work because we didn't know what to expect. FOr me it wasn't so bad, Pain killers for the first full day and second night then tylenol did the trick for the remainder of the week. Everyone handles pain and heals differently I have heard of people being out of work for 2+ weeks for this.

I have a desk job too, and was back at work on Monday after a Wednesday outpatient surgery. I was tired, but not in any real pain, and I survived just fine.

I had my surgery on Monday home by noon on Tuesday. I never needed to take prescription pain meds. I was doing laundry and picking the house up on Wednesday. I could have gone back to work on Friday, but I had the day off already so I stayed home. I went back on Monday and did fine. Only problem I had was I have a desk job, so I found that sitting for long periods of time bothered my incisions a bit.

Surgery on Thursday...back to work on Tuesday. Take Tylenol if you need it, but the best thing is to get back in the swing of things. (I, too, have desk job).

I took a full 5 weeks off. I'm a registered nurse, and have to be able to move patients larger than me, and also my shifts are a minimum of 13 hours each of non stop running. I was glad I have sick time built up, because I didn't want to take a chance while I was still healing inside.

Exact same for me.

It really depends on you. I had surgery on a Wednesday and was back to work full-time the next Tuesday only because Monday was a holiday. Granted, I was tired the first two weeks, but, I bounced right back. I only ended up taking 3 sick leave days.

Good luck!

My Doc told me he wanted me home for a full week - BUT -

I had surgery Monday, and I feel like I could have made it through a day of work today.

Ask your doc. If you take more than 2-3 days you will need a letter from him for your HR dept anyway...

:]

I had surgery on Monday and today I'm sitting up at my (home office) desk and working. I could probably handle a 1/2 day today if I were out of my home and in a regular "business" atmosphere.

I had surgery on Wednesday, and worked from home starting Monday. My doctor said no driving until 7 days post-of, so I was back at the office by Thursday.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
