About pain meds POST OP

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Ok so I am 5 days after surgery. I had a large hiatal hernia repair + lap band + plication on monday(8/15). So far today I am winging it without pain meds since 11:20 last night. Its not the most pleasant thing but its bearable. I was taking 5mg oxycodone about every 4 to 5 hours on the previous days. I am trying to not take the pain meds because I dont want to get hooked. People tell me oxycodone is pretty addictive but at the same time I feel like a few more days might be necessary given my current pain. Id say its probably a 3 out of 10. Should I just ride out the minor pain and not take anymore meds or should I just keep up the doses and feel better?

Thanks in advance

If it were me, I'd take whatever pain meds I needed. I don't think you'll get hooked from a couple of weeks of taking meds as prescribed. People who get addicted to them take them for long periods of time and more than the prescribed amount.

Good luck to you!

Marci

Yeah thanks I broke down and took 5 mg. I feel SOO much better now. I was torturing myself all day. I went 15 hours without them though, so I guess that helps a bit.

Ibuprofen did wonders for me. If youre nervous about taking your prescription you could always try that and see how it works.

FYI some doctors say no ibuprofin after surgery as it irritates the stomach.
