Surgeon Slow to Fill?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Yesterday I had my first fill and my surgeon put in 1cc. I have a 10cc band. I have been reading here that some surgeon's are putting in 4cc or 3cc's the first fill. Is my surgeon going really slow? Is 1cc normal? Should I be asking for more?

I felt really full yesterday but by evening time I was able to get down a shake. I felt full but was still able to drink the entire thing.

Thoughts?

I've heard of a lot of surgeons only putting in 1cc at a time. Personally, I think that's nuts for a first fill. Very few people hit any kind of restriction with less than 4cc. I think you should ask him to start you out with at least 3 and then gradually add to it.

A month after surgery my surgeon put in 2cc. It did nothing for me at all! I waited the 2 months for my second fill. The surgeon refused to do it because I lost 15 pounds. I told him the weight loss was do to will power alone and I was eating much more than a cup of food at each meal. He told me I was doing fine and he'd consider a fill in 2 more months. So I trudge on...

Mine gave me 2ccs-1cc-and now they give.5ccs for every visit. I guess that's not too bad except it's not making much of a difference! I am goig on Monday and hoping he give me .5cs to bring me up to 4ccs which I think will make a difference.

mine does not do more than 2cc a fill. his nurse practioner is really careful about how much she puts in. i already had 3cc after surgery, so only 1.5 cc went in 5 weeks later, then another 1.5cc, then 1cc at 3rd fill, and yesterday with my 4th fill 0.5cc. i am losing the 1 to 2lbs per week like they want, they call it the sweet spot, green zone. :)

some doctors are more cautious than others, especially if they have pt's who think they are fine, and then the next day, have to have Fluid removed.

I hit my green zone with 1.5 cc at my first fill (~2 cc was put in as a passive fill at surgery).

1 cc IS enough for some people.

Don't listen to anyone on here that you need more or should be asking for more. I did listen and I got another 1 cc when I didn't need it (because I thought 1.5 cc was too little based on everyone else's experiences) and I was over filled for two months. Two horrendous months.

1.5 cc was right for me. 1 cc might be right for you.

My doctor puts 3cc-4cc, depending on what type of band you have. I have an AP Standard so I got 3.4cc. My second fill was yesterday and she gave me 1.4cc. So now I am at 4.8cc total in my band. I had a little restriction but felt that I needed more. So they really listen to me there. That's how it should be. They decide how much to put depending on how comfortable the patient is. Good luck!

There are 3 amounts of fill..

~ not enough

~ too much

~ just right

And these 3 amounts are different for everyone!

I came out of surgery with 3cc's and had 1 cc added at my first fill. All the rest of my fills (and I've had quite few over 2 yrs time) have been .5 or even .2cc's OP, you might ask your doctor if they put any in at the time of surgery.

While I rarely felt any drastic difference from my fills, they did work. I was satisfied on small amounts of food for extended periods of time. And that's what we're trying to achieve.. satisfaction .. NOT fullness.

While it can be frustrating to go up slowly in fill amounts, it really is the best way. It's so much easier to learn to take small bites and chew well.. instead of almost slamming the door (to the stomach) and having issues with getting stuck, vomiting, etc.

Hang in there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
