judyk 9 Posted August 19, 2011 I've been a yoyo dieter all my life. I am now at my heaviest and miserable. To be healthy I must get the weight off and keep it off. 5 ft 5 in and 196 lb. 62 years young, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, back problems, high blood sugar, high cholesteral and high triglycerides I would appreciate some feedback on my current situation. Yesterday I had a consultation for lap band. Went in to the consult thinking I would self-pay about $10,000. Turns out if I gain 15 pounds my insurance will pay for everything. Should I try to gain the weight? I can't really afford to self-pay. Thanks for some opinions. Judy K
brbm6 6 Posted August 19, 2011 I hate to say this but, I would. If you have been a yo-yo dieter your entire life (I can relate) then...........go for it. I am sure others will tell you no. This is just my opinion. Either way, it has to be your choice. You are the one that will have to live with the band. I will say that 15 lbs. would probably come off quickly during the pre-op diet. Again, just my opinion. Good luck with your choice.

And reqires that I lose 5 lbs.

Funny when I went to the pre op I was told I lost weight and was just 3 pounds over to get the op. Good luck girl hope it all works out for you. Mary Oh by the way BEST THING I EVER DID LAP BAND....Did it for ME!!! Mary
Cindy C 150 Posted August 19, 2011 I hate the idea of intentionally gaining weight. I suggest you make your appointment for later in the day when you naturally weigh more, eat before you go, wear heavy clothes and shoes and strap on a couple of ankle weights! 2 123crod and Ready2 reacted to this

Lynn Schmibo 1 Posted August 19, 2011 I would , you know I had to jeep my weight up to 230 lbs to have my insurance approve me cuz that was one of their requirements so you know what I've been doing the last two weeks- eating ice cream every night! Yep! It sounds horrible and actually I felt horrible but I did end up weighing close to it when I met my surgeon. And he said 100 lbs is good but not morefor my height and ideal weight ! He said he is 99% sure I will get approved. I also have hypertension, high Chol, and Triglycrides! It sounds stupid and doesn't sound good but if you want the lap Band, I would do it! ready4changein2011 70 Posted August 19, 2011 I would gain the weight also, keep ur money. After all its only 15 pounds and u will probably lose that during the pre-op diet. By then u will have been approved by the insurance. I've been a yoyo dieter all my life. I am now at my heaviest and miserable. B-52 7,113 Posted August 19, 2011 I had the same dilemma during the mandatory 6 month medically supervised weight loss program my insurance made me take. I was loosing weight, and was approaching the cut-off point. But I have been on many diets before and they did not work. I needed something more permanent like surgery. I am almost 60, and also felt that this was something I needed to do now before I got too old. (?) However, close to the end of the 6 months I started to gain weight back. Not intentionally, just that diets don't work and bad habits came back. BTW, like you, I also had co-morbidity's that you have described. Diabetes, cholesterol, triglycerides, angioplasty, etc, etc. That put me on a different BMI scale than other people. Does that not apply to you also?? I remember having a face to face with my primary. He said if you loose the weight, all these things will go away. He Was Right!!!! When I was going through my pre-testing, people would comment "You? You don't look like you need this surgery. A good diet is all you need" They don't know the full story, my (and my families) medical history. I remember my first interview with the PRN at the weight loss center. She asked me the standard opening question: "Why do you feel you need this surgery?" My response was "Because I don't want to die" So yes, IMO, I would gain the 15lbs. It's a small trade-off for the better things to come.
vucarre 0 Posted August 19, 2011 I hate to be a downer. But, this is a progressive disease. It gets worse not better. Two years ago, I would have said no, I would not gain weight to get the surgery. Knowing what I know now, I would have. Because, I gained the weight to qualify for the surgery on my own without even trying. I am 47 and if I had done this two years ago, I would have had the weight off by now. And, just like the previous poster said, you have to decide for yourself. Best wishes to you either way!!! seabee chief 0 Posted August 19, 2011 That is a decision that you will have to make for yourself. I can tell you that that is exactly what I did however and I feel comfortable with my decision..
