Hello All -

I have posted a few times here but never made a formal introduction, so I thought it was high time I did so.

My name is Kayla, I live in Boise, ID and will be banded on February 27th by Dr. Cahn. I chose the name Veritas as my user name because it is Latin for truth and I felt like that was an appropriate word for me right now. I think I am finally ready to be honest and truthful with myself about why I am overweight and what it is going to take to change my life.

I grew up on a farm and have been overweight practically my whole life. I always told myself it was because I was "big boned" and came from "sturdy stock" (come to think of it, I think my parents told me the same things) But over time I went from being chubby to downright fat and am now medically considered morbidly obese. What an ugly description!! I have always had my head in the sand when it came to my weight. I take the utmost care in my appearance (most of the time anyway) and have worked hard on focusing on other aspects about myself that are positive. I am smart and funny and very capable and talented in so many different areas. But the truth finally hit me hard recently when I realized none of those things really matter if i drop dead of a heart attack or become so limited by my weight that I can't lead a normal life!

I turn 30 years old in August this year. I am determined that my 30's will be better than my 20's. And if I don't have children, it won't be because I am too overweight to conceive. I am also married and while our relationship is struggling right now, I truly believe that as I am able to lose weight and finally be at peace with myself when it comes to food, I will also be able to be a better partner to my husband.

I am so looking forward to being banded and taking the next step in this journey. I am glad I found this website. It seems like a wonderful community of people and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Kayla

I'm in Kansas City, MO. I'm in their online IPT program. It's in interesting experience. We're mixed with people who are in the program on campuis, and I always hear them talking about the "Smurf Turf".

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
