Six months supervised diet

Recommended Posts

This is my third month of my supervised diet. I was just wondering if your surgery date is close to your last weighin or is it a little while?

Unfortunately the final weigh in will prompt the doctor/dietician to give the documentation of a completed diet and THEN the surgery will be scheduled. The insurance usually has to submit approval before they will schedule it. I'm so proud of you, hang in there! You will be VERY happy you had to go through this, although it may feel like torture now. This is the right way to do it and you are given ample time to prepare yourself for this life changing event. Hang in there, you're over half way there!!!!

I think every insurance can be different. My initial consult was May 26, 2010 so my 1st appointment with my Primary Care for the supervised diet (my insurance also required 6 months) was the first week of June, July etc. By the September appointment my insurance company approved me and my surgeon was ready to put me on the schedule within 2-3 weeks. However, I had a family emergency and had to postpone my surgery until October 25th but all was in place just waiting for my availability.

I had my initial consult in Jan 2010 I was approved in 2 weeks. I had to lose 34 pounds which I had done by late Feb 2010. Due to an unresolved blood clot I had to postpone my surgery. When I got a go ahead in July I was put on the doctors schedule in August. So basically even with insurance approval depending on how busy you doctor is that may affect how quickly your surgery can happen. Also you'll need to do the presurgery labs as well. My doctor had a class on the post op diet to explain exactly what you should be eating at what stage. Depending on how flexible your schedule is you could ask to be put on a cancellation list (many people get cold feet). My mother moved up her hip replacement by 3 weeks being on such a list.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
