How to pick goal weight

Recommended Posts

I know what I look like at the highest end of the 'normal' scale on the BMI charts and it is way too skinny. Those charts are not really all that accurate for a lot of people. At 6' 3" and 205 lbs in high school, I looked stupid skinny. 230 lbs is perfect for my bones and the BMI chart is way off in my case.

I agree Jachut. Normal BMI is 18.5-24.9. I weigh 133 with a BMI of 22.8. That is mid-range normal. I am in no way a stick, I have curves and breasts and do not look at all sickly. My husband who has never been overweight is 5’5” and 152 pounds. He has little love handles and a little bit of a belly but is muscular too and I don’t mind saying looks damn fine

I have not reached the lower end of normal BMI and don’t intend to. To do so would require me to weigh 108 pounds. When I was around a 20 BMI (120 pounds) my face was a bit sunken and I did not think I looked well. At higher-end normal (145 pounds) I was within the healthy BMI range and still looked a little “chunky”. Only a 12 pound difference from where I am now but at normal weight 12 pounds lost or gained is much more noticeable.

The BMI chart is not ideal and does not work for every body type. Just saying that at least for me, I can be within the healthy BMI and still have the ability to choose to have a little bit of meat on my bones or no meat at all.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
