jsea 3 Posted August 9, 2011 I met with my Doctor today and she scheduled my surgery for August 29th!!! I am beyond excited. I have an Upper GI, EKG and Nutrisionist visit scheduled for this Thursday. I would appreciate any input around things that you would suggest I do to get ready for surgery because I am not required to be on any diet prior but wonder if I should put myself on a liquid diet just to prepare for post-operation. Any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
sweetpea61956 6 Posted August 9, 2011 I would suggest if you don't do liquids just try not to eat carbs. Congratulations!
marfar7 1,533 Posted August 9, 2011 It's very rare that you don't have to be on a liquid diet before surgery. I was one of the lucky ones that could eat whatever I wanted till the midnight before surgery - but my doc was strict with the post-op diet (clear liquids+protein shakes for 4 weeks!). And I did eat whatever I wanted. Went to Outback for ribs the night before my surgery. Ate 5 ribs, baked potato, salad, bread and cheesecake. Now almost 2 yrs later, I'm able to eat about 10 bites total per meal. If it were me, I'd forgo the liquids beforehand. You're gonna get enuf of them afterwards. I can't even look at Jello or popsicles anymore! But that's just me. Good luck with your surgery! Marci
sherrypep 91 Posted August 10, 2011 My surgery is August 24th and my docter does not require a liqued diet thank god but does suggest an Atkins diet for two weeks. He told me that staying away from carbs for two weeks shrinks your liver and fat and makes it easier for the surgeon to get to your stomach. I am diabetic so I am adding a little carbs in the form of fruit so my sugar doesnt get to low. Good luck!
jsea 3 Posted August 10, 2011 Thanks everyone for your input!!! My doctor told me there was no need for the liquid"s because she doesn't make people with less than a 40 BMI lose weight prior to surgery. Nonetheless I didn't know if I should do it anyway but you are right, I will be drinking more than enough liquids post-op so I am going to just wait until after surgery to begin with the liquids.
