Non-Laproscopic Hysterectomy surgery pain vs. Lapband surgery pain

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm just starting my journey to getting banded.

I'm reading about a lot of people talking about the pain/soreness after their lapband surgery. I had a hysterectomy several years ago -- the regular slice you open leaving you with a smile scar style as they were unable for medical reasons to do it laproscopically.

If anyone has had this type of surgery AND has had the lapband surgery done...

How did the post-surgery pain compare?

Just curious. It's not like it will affect my decision to have the band surgery done.

Mary

I have had two c-sections and the hysterectomy...the lap band surgery is a breeze in comparison!

I, too, had almost no post surgical pain. But it is still very important to take it easy after surgery. I overdid it and ended up having my stomach swell, causing terrible nausea for 4-5 days. Kick back relax, drink liquids, follow your doc's advice, no matter how "fine" you feel.

Since then, things are going very well, BTW. Love my band. Best of luck to you!

I had a hysterectomy and that was "pain", this was just soreness. You will be just fine.

I had a full hysterectomy about 5 years ago and was banded July 25 little over two weeks ago.

The pain for the band was nothing like the hysterectomy! Getting the band was almost painless! I had pain in two places, where the stupid nurse put my iv in my hand and my port area. Even those were not as bad as the hysterectomy. trust me.

I slept on the coach when I had that but slept in my bad after the band. Relax if you survived the pain of the hysterectomy you will be surprised that there is not much pain with the band!

Not that the people who've been banding don't feel pain. I figured if I could get a comparison of the two and knew that I could handle the hysterectomy pain that as long as people didn't say it was worse then I wouldn't be concerned at all about the incision sites for the scope and such. I had more issues with the air they filled me with than with any pain from the incision -- so I'll know what to expect from when they do that during the banding. I'm assuming that they pump air into you to give them room to work -- maybe I'm wrong.

You are correct, most of the pain, for me came from the air/gas. But walking worked on that and it was completely gone, for me, in a couple of days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
