Pre banding tests

Recommended Posts

I went to a seminar in July and have my surgical consult Aug, 24. I have already received insurance approval for the surger, and I do not have to do the 6 months of monitored diet. I am curious what sorts of other testing did others require? And should I go see my primary Dr. in the meantime to get started? I know it can take months to get in to some of the specialists. I know I need nutrition and psych. I have a current sleep study for my sleep apnea. Any Advce? I just want to get "the show on th road" as they say. :rolleyes:Thank you

All I had to do was a chest x-ray (because I had been a smoke and quit two year before my surgery), an EKG and a blood draw. I didn't have any serious comorbidities so that might be why I didn't have to do many tests. I didn't even have to do a psych consult.

Great for you, unlike most Of us who have to wait. It wouldnt hurt to see your PCP bc I think it requires a physical and blood work before surgery.

Hi there! I believe all the pre testing (besides blood work) will depend on your current health. I have sleep apnea but because I see my doctor regularly I didn't have to go. I had to have an EKG, blood work, breathing test, Psych and a chest x-ray. Once I got all that done they submitted it to the insurance and within a week I was approved.

Good luck to you!!

I had no health issues at all before surgery, but I had to see a Cardiologist (EKG, echo and blood work), Pulmonologist (sleep study and breathing test), Psychologist, and Endocrinologist (blood work). My surgeon requires all that to be done before surgery!

Along with the 6 months pre-surgery diet, I had to do the following within those 6 months:

1) Psyc. eval

2) Pulmonary workup - clearance by Pulmonologist.

3) Nuclear stress test - clearance by Cardiologist.

Then, within 30 days of surgery, a Endoscopy that was performed by the Surgeon.

The standard pre-op blood work, x-rays, etc., done by the hospital where the surgery was to take place. (pre-admission)

Then finally, clearance by my Primary.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
