Denial My Band Needs to Come Out

Recommended Posts

I was banded July 30 2008. I've honestly had nothing but problems. I've blamed it on my own body and non-compliance. I've had constant pain, nausea, vomiting, reoperation and the inability to ever have my band filled amoung other problems. The last six weeks have been horrible, I've developed acid reflux, which I've never had in my life, I have nearly constant mild to severe abdominal, flank and back pain. I throw up and PB multiple times daily. My band has become so tight despite not having any Fluid in it that I can physically feel it wrenching my stomach when I make certain sudden movements. I've now developed gastroparesis and have severe chronic gastritis. The most I have lost is 50lbs of the 130lb I need to lose, and that was when I was at the gym 10 hours or more a week. I've gained back 30lbs in this past year.

Even with all these problems I've been in total denial that I need the band out. I think I've finally come to terms that this thing needs to come out! I have no idea why I've let myself suffer for so long. I have so much scar tissue and my stomach is so terribly battered right now I'm terrified for the surgery. I had a CT and an EGD this past week and they were both abnormal. I had a diagnostic lap 2 years ago with my bariatric surgeon and i had such terrible scar tissue everywhere and especially on my spleen. He told me if he ever went in again he was going to have to take out my spleen! I actually work with my baritric surgeon on the inpatient side and I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. While I know that he would take extra special care to do it right, I know what can go wrong and it scares me a lot.

Well, I think i have a lot of discussing and thinking to do. I know in the end the answer is removal, but I just need to figure out the the logistics of it all and try to come to terms with it.

I feel that you have just discribed me. I have had my band since 2009, I have never been able to have a fill because my band is naturally tight. I have already had surgery to correct a slip. After the surgery I was doing good for a month or two, and then my band began to become tight. I have acid reflux all the time dispite the fact that I take Nexium everyday. I can't sleep because I spend the entire night choking on the acid. I have lost a total of 80lbs of the 90 I needed to lose. I have constant gastritis, and I don't ever feel like eating. I am so scared that I am going to get sick. I have not gone to see my doctor because I fear that the answer is to remove the band. I am so scared to gain all the weight back. Please keep me updated on your situation..

Just curious as to what you decided. I got banded Oct 2008 and no weight loss. I have had fills and fills removed and thrown up and just haven't done well at all. Six months after the surgery I started getting psoriasis on my hands, feet, legs, fingers, etc they looked like hamburger meat. It is affecting my job now. I went to several family doctors, two dematologists, three rheumatologists. Finally the last rheumatologist I went to diagnosed me as psoriatic arthritis. I am now taking Embrel and Methotextrate injections every week and still I am in bad shape. It is like Rheumatoid arthrtitis where it deforms your joints. My sed rate which is inflamation in your body was elevated. I already had one immune disease before surgery (sjogrens) and I told them about it but they still did the surgery. My family thinks this is realated to the band I have done research for two years now and can't get any confirmations on this. Even my doctors say no it can't be the band. It just seems wierd how it happened just a few months later. Need a little information and I am like you I am really afraid of going through this surgery again.

Thanks,

Cheryl Lynn

I have the same problem. About a month ago my doctor removed all of the Fluid in my band and I felt 100% again. I went back in because I was gaining and he filled it about half as full as when he first took it out. I still had no restriction and was gaining but had NO reflux or anything. I returned last week and he put in just a few more CC's. I have perfect restriction but the reflux is back and I spit up sour liquid and this substance that has the consistancy of gum that has been chewed for way too long. I was hoping that going back on my liquid diet would help it heal but it didn't seem to help. Has anyone had this and found relief in anything besides getting the band removed or having all of the fluid removed?

Thank you for your honesty. I was banded in 2/2007 and have had nothing but problems. I PB anything except ice cream and it's is so demoralizing. I have been coping (ignoring) it but it's now time to get it out. I feel like a failure.

I had the band placed in Dec 2008,Removed Nov 2010-I had numerous surgeries and revisions in between those two dates-my incisions never healed from the original surgery-they thought it was a post surgical infection, i was packing wounds for 2 years before they decided to just take out the band.I never had the band filled.I had a serious erosion problem- but it was not discovered until the band was removed.then they only found 1 hole under where the band was.The lap-Band almost killed me-I am still recovering from that-I was in and out of the hospital for months-this last July i went to USC where they discovered several leaks to the back of my stomach-they had to remove the fundus of my stomach i also developed many other problems all stemming from the Lap-Band. The GI surgeon-specialist at USC stated that he would never place a lap-band in any one unless their life was seriously threatened-he stated that the gastric sleeve is a much safer way to go.Lap-Band is a foreign object and it can cause erosion. This is a long story but seriously shortened-I also had constant nausea and vommitting.I actually lost more weight after the band was removed, I only lost about 30 lbs with the band and no fills. I dont think i will ever be the same-it caused serious permanent damage. It just kills me when i hear that so many people are getting this done.Have it taken out don't delay-it could be your life on the line. I saw a Dr. Crookes at USC he and his staff were amazing-they saved my life!!

I am so sorry about you Mom. I am really worried about having this surgery. What is ARDS? I am going to the doctor today to have my primary doctor order up tests before surgery. I also am interested in your diet you have been on. This was the craziest thing I believe I have ever done. My family was totaly against the lapband but I wouldn't listen. I pray I can get through this and start new by losing weight the way it should be done.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Saw my PCP & officially started my 6 month supervised diet 07/26/24. She just told me to eat less carbs & sugar, use the air fryer and not fry my foods in grease, and to try to walk 30 minutes 3 days a week & if I can't do that (and I cannot), to walk 10 minutes daily. Told me to walk fast enough that my heart rate is raised.  She didn't give me a number as far as calories though. A year or so ago I was doing low carb/sugar free and keeping my calories at 1800 or below. She said I should up my cals to 2000 at that time, so that's what I'm shooting for now.
Hubby walked with me today. He's in pretty bad shape so I was surprised he wanted to. We walked down the gravel road at a pretty good pace (for us LOL). 10 minutes walking and my heart rate was 115bps according to my Fitbit and 125bps according to his pulsometer. Either way, it was elevated and I was breathing hard. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it's a start. We'll do it again tomorrow. 😁
I should be hearing from the surgeon soon. She said if I didn't, to call him next week. Since I HAVE to do the 6 month diet & that's going to put me into January by the time it's done, I'm hoping the surgeon will let me do all my testing in January. I don't want to do it all now and have my deductible get met, only to have to pay the deductible again in January or February for my surgery. Praying that things go the way I hope. 🙏

Factors Affecting the Growth of the Alternative Sweeteners Industry:
Health Consciousness: The increasing awareness among individuals about the health issues linked to high sugar consumption, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, is supporting the market growth. Consumers are becoming more health-conscious and seeking products that can provide sweetness without the negative health effects associated with sugar. This shift in consumer preferences is leading to a greater demand for low-calorie and natural sweeteners like stevia, monk fruit, and erythritol. These sweeteners offer the added benefit of having minimal impact on blood glucose levels, making them suitable for diabetic and health-conscious individuals.
Technological Advancements: Innovations in the production and formulation of alternative sweeteners are impelling the market growth. Advancements in biotechnology and food science are leading to the development of high-intensity sweeteners with improved taste profiles and functional properties. Innovations in fermentation processes enhance the production efficiency and quality of natural sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit. These technological improvements are making alternative sweeteners more appealing to both manufacturers and consumers. Enhanced stability, solubility, and sweetness intensity allow these sweeteners to be used in a wide range of products, ranging from beverages to baked goods.
Consumer Trends and Preferences: Evolving consumer trends and preferences are playing a significant role in driving the alternative sweeteners market. The growing demand for clean-label products, which are healthier and free from artificial ingredients, is offering a favorable market outlook. Consumers are increasingly seeking natural and plant-based sweeteners, aligning with broader trends toward plant-based diets and veganism. Besides this, there is an increase in the demand for low-calorie and sugar-free alternatives that support weight management and overall wellness. Food and beverage companies are responding to these trends by innovating and expanding their product lines to include options sweetened with alternative sweeteners, thereby catering to changing tastes and health concerns of modern consumers.
