Some doctors have specific weight limits in order to perform the surgery. The only thing my doctor requires is that people weigh less than 400 pounds. I have heard that some doctors require a certain BMI. It all depends on the surgeon and hospital.

My surgeon asked for a 10 pound weight loss in the 7 days prior to surgery. He had me follow an 870 calorie a day high Protein diet: 3 Protein Shakes and one small meal daily. I lost 11 pounds and he said he loves over achievers. :>)

The purpose of the diet is to shrink the liver and make the surgery safer and easier.

I have the same surgeon that you have. I had my surgery on May 17, 2011. Dr Peck is great. She wants to see you make accomplishments and help you with your weight loss. During the pre op process. I didn't gain any weight. I either loss or stay the same. Dr Peck is a excellent surgeon and has great bed side manners. I think you are going to love her like I do. I can talk to her about anything.

My doctor recommended the lap-band for patients under 300 lbs (if you were over they recommended a more drastic procedure due to published success rates and outcomes or you get down to that weight first).

Also my doctor wouldn't perform the surgery unless you lost 10% of your body weight first. I had to drop 22 lbs before the liquid diet and then my two week liquid diet should help me loose the other 10 lbs. However I have managed to drop 48 lbs before my liquid diet and still dropping.

Still getting the lap band because I still have a ways to go and I need the tool for a lifetime of keeping it off!

My doctor required 10% body weight (33 pounds). Due to having to delay for other health issues I ended up losing 50 pounds. This is the time to develope a new relationship with food. Does your doctor have therapy sessions on eating (even group sessions)? Those are really helpful. At least when I was on this stricked diet for 8 months I felt like I was losing for the last time. That I was'nt going to regain it. Fingers crossed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
