Lap Band Not working

Recommended Posts

I got an email today saying congratulations you are 3 years post banding and that really hit home becasue 3 years have passed and I have not lost a single pound of weight since I had my band operation in 2008. I have had 8+ fills and should have 9mls in an 10 ml band but last time I went back to see the fil surgeon he said I only had 5 mls in place. The very first fill I had caused some discomfort when he expirated the band and he said 'oh thats interesting that usually only happens if there is a leak in the band, I will check next time to make sure'. Next time came and there was still the same amount of Fluid in the band so he dismissed the idea of a leak. I then went back every 3 months paying £90 each time to be told at the last consultation there was only 5 mls, the same amount that I had after 1 year post op. My partner is very unhappy says it was a complete waste of money and will not allow me to go back and see the surgeon so now I am stuck (literally) with a faulty band and still about 5 stone overweight. I thought i could really change my life :(

I don't mean to upset anyone I really hope everyone else has a much better expereince than I have and succeeds where I clearly have failed.

Love

annika

Why don't you go find a different doctor? Surely the investment you spent to get the band would make it worth trying everything possible to figure out why it's not working. If the port is leaking, then it needs to be fixed. Your partner is unfairly keeping you from getting this issue resolved. The band will work really well, if it's working as advertised, and is properly adjusted.

Good luck!

Dave

Thank you Dave I appreciate you taking the time to reply, I felt awful after writng my expereince as everyone else seems so positive, in reality I saved for 10 years to have the op and was selfish in thinking about me and how it would make me feel better, if I went to another dr I would never be able to have the funds again to correct it but I won't know unless I ask the question, sorry for being pessimistic.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
