Will banding work if I have Hypothyroidism??

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed 9 years ago with Type 1 diabetes. The day I was diagnosed, I was also told I also have Hypothyroidsim (which means my thyroid is underactive). I was placed on Synthroid and to be quite honest, when I would try to lose weight I would be successful. This all stopped about a year ago, it has seemed virtually impossible for me to lose weight. My levels are monitored every three months by my Endocronologyst and I am in control. I am scared to death that I am going to pay all this money to get my band and that I will not lose any weight. I would really appreciate any input from anyone out there with an underactive thyroid and what you've gone through and how you're doing on the band. I don't care if the weight takes a little longer to come off, what I'm scared to death about is that I won't lose anything.

I have type 2 diabetes and have been hypothyroid for 20 yrs. I was banded may 2 this year and to date have lost 55lbs. Not everyone is the same, I can only speak for myself. I would think as long as you are on the correct dose you should be able to lose weight. I actually had to decrease my synthroid dose after surgery after my pcp checked my tsh and it was 0.

Thank you for your response. That is wonderful that you have lost so much weight already. I have done a ton of research on this and from everything I've read it seems that weight loss is very possible if your levels are in check. Many people have stated that they have had to lower their dosage as they lose weight. I'm very hopeful that I am successful.

I am also hypothyroid, on 200mcg of Synthroid daily. I haven't had to adjust my dosage yet, but go back for blood work in September, so maybe then. My loss has been slower than alot of others on here, but I am losing. I am down 39 lbs since starting my pre-op diet and 22 inches. Good luck on your journey!! Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Oh this is wonderful to hear. I fully realize everyone is different but it is good to hear that you can be successful. I am a self pay and am meeting with the doctor and nutrisionist on Thursday. After that I will be scheduled for an upper GI and EKG and then surgery will be scheduled. The doctors said it goes very quickly when you are self pay so I am looking forward to having surgery this month. It's time to get healthy!!!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
