Some Days....

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anybody else has had the same experience as I have. Most days, I can manage most foods if I eat in the right proportion and chew properly. Other days, Soup will almost give me a hard stop!

I was wondering if anybody else has had days like this, and what causes it.

I am absolutely thrilled with my lap band. Even though the days I describe can be a bit annoying, I am so glad to have this tool to assist me in my weight loss.

It happens to me sometimes. I'm tighter in the morning, but if I've had coffee, things seem to loosen up a bit. If I go a long time between meals, or try to eat something really dense (grilled chicken breast, for example) I may have a harder time. But then, some days I feel like I could eat a horse, and nothing would get stuck. it's weird. :)

My band also has a mind of its own sometimes. Some days I'm wide open, and others it's hard to get even liquids down. Stress is a big factor...the more stressed I am the tighter I am. I've also found that I get tighter around "that time of the month." When I have a cold, I get all clogged up from post-nasal drip. Colder weather sometimes tightens me up, too (and I've heard others say that warmer weather makes them tighter). I also have to drink coffee or tea in the morning before attempting anything to eat, and even then the most solid thing I can get down is cottage cheese. There's also a thing called "first bite syndrome" where the first few bites you take will have a tough time going down. I get this A LOT. Just chew chew chew those first bites, and eat very slowly at first. After the first few bites food should go down normally. I don't know why this is, but it does seem worse when I'm very hungry. Also, make sure you're getting your Water in! The days when I'm fully hydrated (at least 64oz of water) I have a much easier time eating. Those days when I don't get all my water in, and usually the day following, I get stuck very easily. In time you'll get to know your band's tendencies and what makes you tighter. Of course, sometimes there's just no rhyme or reason to it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
