I'm six days post-op, everything going fine. Tonight my tongue turned white, it's so gross and feels like little particles are coming off of it. Please someone tell me this is normal, what should I do?

Yep, I agree, sounds like thrush. Call your doctor in the morning and some antibiotics should clear it right up.

Keep yourself hydrated. It may be thrush, but it may just be bacteria and either can be aggravated by dehydrationg. Be sure to brush your tongue when brushing your teeth. Using a tongue scraper can help today. You can get one at any oral care aisle at a grocery store or Target/Walmart. Warm salt Water rinses can help too.

I developed thrush after my surgery. I kid you not it was worse to deal with than recovering from the surgery...for me anyhow. Every time I had to swish with that antibiotic I wanted to throw up. And my mouth felt so disgusting with that bacteria. Hang in there. It's temporary.

The same thing happened to me. (I'm a dental hygienist) It does not sound like thrush to me. I believe mine was caused by my tongue drying out during surgery. This may sound a bit strange ........to get it to stop, I sucked on a mild cough drop and then chewed a piece of gum. This helped the tounge shed off all those little papilla that sound like they are going to come off anyway. Then I gently brushed my tongue a few times. The papilla will quickly grow back and your mouth will feel better for it.

I just noticed your post is a few days old......did your tongue get better?

Thanks, yes it did. I just brushed my teeth a lot and rinsed with salt Water. That was a very strange experience!

Mine was similar after surgery. I woke up and had cotton mouth so bad that I didn't really have my voice for about three days. I still have white spots on my tongue (10days post op) but I think mine was just from the dryness during surgery and lack of hydration that happened during the first week. It'll go away over time. I usually have a film over it every morning as well that doesn't go away until I brush my teeth. Guess it's from NO food for a month now lol...good luck!

I experienced the same thing during my first post op week. I believe that is has to do with the Protein Shakes and Isopure Water. All that whey Protein collects on the taste buds of the tongue. I used a tongue cleaner, and a good anti bacterial mouth wash. Problem solved. Have to admit that it was quite gross. LOL!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
