Endoscopy??

Recommended Posts

OK,no response to the difference between upper GI and endo,so lets try this....

How do they do an endoscopy?

Anyone know?I am a RN but I am not English speaking. The terms are confusing to me and I would like to find out if it is a gastroscopy we are talking about when one says endoscopy.

Help please....

My understanding is they put a tiny camera down your throat and into your stomach pouch to look at the stomach lining from the inside, checking for erosion. I could be wrong though.

There's a huge difference. You are wide awake for an Upper GI. You drink barium Fluid while they x-ray your stomach, which allows them to see how the barium flows through your stomach.

You are asleep for an endoscopy, which is when a camera is inserted into your mouth and down your throat to take pictures of the inside of your stomach. The camera is tiny and attached to a long tube, so you don't feel anything.

It is the same thing. Gastroscopy = upper gastrointerstinal endoscopy.

Gastroscopy is the specific procedure. Endoscope is the tool, so endoscopy would be anything done with the tool. Gastroscopy indicates where the endoscopy is being done. :(

Hmm a stalemate. :(

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=j>Gastroscopy or Endoscopy is a procedure in which well-trained specialist uses the endoscope to diagnose or to treat problems of the upper digestive system.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Actually some places don't knock you out for an endoscopy, some do. Either way they spray your throat with numbing spray and put a tiny camera down your throat.

I got a Mild sedation for my endoscopy. I could hear and see what was going on but I really didn't care. There was one period where I was gagging but I relaxed quickly. The thing to remember is just not fight it. The more you do the longer the procedure will take. They do spray your throat to numb it, which feels funny. Think like when you go to the dentist and he numbs your gums that is how your throat feels.

Endoscopy = "End" usually refers to inside or esophagus (if I remember my medical terminology right) and "oscopy" is referring to viewing whatever the first part of the word is. So in this case it is inside the body.

Gastroscopy = "Gastro" refers to the stomach -- So this is looking inside the stomach.

The actual correct term for what we are calling and Endoscopy is EGD which just refers to the actual parts of the Digestive system is viewed. Esophagus, Gastric, and Duodenum.

Now, an UPPER GI is simple an Xray taken while you swallow Barium liquid to see how the Esophagus works the Fluid down into the stomach and once there to see how the stomach empties. In a Bandsters, case they are looking to see how the pouch empties into the bottom of the stomach.

EGD - esophagogastroduodenoscopy

Former medical transcriptionist here. LOL. Haven't worked for two years though....had to retire due to disability (arthritis). Sitting at a desk for 20 years transcribing and then 13 more years at home at a computer makes for a lot of weight gain and ultimately contributed to the arthritis.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
