I feel like an idiot!

Recommended Posts

So i was banded on July 18th and have done extremely well with healing. My lap cuts are healed over perfectly now, I haven't thrown up or felt sick once since surgery, I haven't had any problems.

Well...some friends came to visit this weekend and insisted on going out to dinner. I picked a place I knew serves Protein Shakes so i ordered one of those and a side dish (no one except my husband knows about the band). I drank about 4 oz of Protein shake and made sure I talked a lot to avoid anyone noticing my lack of eating. The next day they insisted on lunch. Didn't take no for an answer! So we went out and somehow I talked myself into thinking it was ok to eat a kids size tuna sub from Subway. It felt fine. I didn't get a sick or stuck feeling at all. But then I started to feel bad emotionally. Now I can't shake the worried feeling that I permanently messed my band up and that it is going to slip. I keep getting hiccups (which ive had my whole life) and keep thinking I messed up my fundoplication! I have a pit in my stomach from anxiety.

Of course I won't make the mistake again and am back to Protein shakes until the doctor clears me. I have my post op appointment on Tuesday where I will talk to him about what I did.

Has anyone else made this mistake and paid the price? Or did it turn out ok? Thanks for any help. There's no one I can talk to until I go in to see the doc and it is really weighing on my mind.

Hi! First off congrats on your band!! Next quit worrying so much! Everything seems fine. So you are probably fine. I am not gonna lie, I ate a few things post op when I was supposed to be on mushies that wasnt mushies. Was it the right thing? No, but I am fine. You are psyching yourself out. Right now you should have little if any fill so the band is pretty open. I would just do what you are doing. Go back to what you are suppose to do and talk with your doc. I am pretty sure you are fine. You will know when you get stuck and if you have had the hiccups all your life it is more than likely normal and nothing to worry about. :)

Wow, when you said tuna, I just KNEW you were gonna say it was stuck! But seriously, its ok! if you slipped you know know it... wouldnt be able to hold anything down! 2 days post op I wanted some Nes Quick strawberry Milk.... So.... afterwards, I am sitting on the side of the bath tub (which is right next to the toilet) Dry heaving. Mind you, I was only 2 day out, so the heaving it self about KILLED ME. My prayer went something like this "Please God, I dont want to throw up! It will hurt SOOO bad. Please dont make me throw up, I swear, I will not drink anything but Water until I have been given the ok" I laugh at it now, but I was in tears at the time.

Point is, we all make mistakes. We have to learn from them.

Thank you guys! I am feeling better about it now. I ate very little and made sure I didn't even get close to being full. I feel perfectly fine. No pain or vomiting. I actually feel a little better because I was finally able to get my bowels moving! I only have one more week until I can eat solids (I'm starting mushies today yay). I know I can make it. Thank you so much for the support. I just can't believe I would jeopardize this opportunity. Lesson learned!

Thanks again :)

Dont worry...I had scrambled eggs about 4 days after surgery. I posted a similar post to yours worried that I ruined something and feeling guilty. You will be fine. Just get back on track and follow the doctors instructions.

The crazy thing is that every dr. seems to be different in their post op instructions. Some people are cleared to eat solid food after a week.

Get back on track and you will be fine.

Congrats on surgery! I wish you much luck in your journey!

The main reason for the liquid diet after surgery is to give your stomach time for the band stitches to heal. Digesting food is rough on your stomach - acids are sloshing around down there, and it can negatively affect the band. In this case you ate something modest, and had no side effects, but you'll want to be doubly careful until your surgeon advises you it's safe to move on to other food types. After you're healed, it's a different thing. But for now, you're well advised to take it easy.

All told, congratulations on your band! It's a huge life change, and you're doing great to be so aware of how you're doing.

Good luck!

Dave

Well congrats on the band ! No use crying over spilled milk. Just don't do something like that again, you need to heal !

If it's only your conscious hurting, and your not in pain, I wouldn't worry about it.

I forgot what I slipped up on,, but yes I did, and only 1 time.

Shirley

Well, I am sure you're not the only one who ever cheated early. All Dr.'s are different. I was banded on June 9th and they had me on a clear liquid diet for only one week and then full liquides for ONE DAY, and then mushies for ONE DAY.....Then I could try what I wanted to after that. It sounds like your dr. is a bit more strict. Needless to say, I think you will be fine as long as nothing is stuck:)

I'm so glad that you're feeling better! What I always say that it isn't the mistake that's the bad part, it's if you don't learn from that mistake and create a pattern that's bad; and it looks like you did everything right. You acknowledged what you did wrong, and you made a promise not to make the mistake again, and you learned from it! It sounds like you're doing great, and I'm sure that you are going to continue on that way :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
