1st step...lap band consultation

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

So, I went for my consultation with my surgeon today...and got the approval from him. I start seeing the dietician on 8/19 but due to my insurance I have to wait 6 months until I can have surgery. I have to lose 20lbs before then or they deny. Any advice for me? It seems like 6 months is so far away, but I guess if you think about I've been overweight for so long what's 6 more months!!

Looking forward to this journey and starting a new life...a healthy life! :D

I had a 4 month wait and am so very glad I did. I took the time to really make sure my brain was ready. I stopped all sugar in the first month, started drinking Water (which I hate) and went from 6-8 20oz diet cokes a day to 2. Take the time to start practicing...eating slower, taking smaller bites, not drinking when you are eating. If you can start exercising..I didn't but I wish I would have. You will be surprised how fast the 6 months will go. Good luck!

That's gonna be my biggest struggle...the cokes! I know I drink waaaay to many in one day. You give great advice!! I was thinking of starting the Protein shakes now so that I can get used to them. I'm not big on shakes...not even the bad kind lol. We just bought a treadmill so I am going to attempt to do that a few times a week. Also, I do need to start eating slower. I've been in the habit of eating so fast because of my 2 year old!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
