Inches gone but no weight loss, how can this be?

Recommended Posts

Okay Banders, I was banded March 7 2011 and so far I have only lost 29lbs. But I have gone from a 3x top to a 1x top and size 18 pants to 14 pants. Has anyone else lost inches but no real weight loss? Is it possible I’m gaining muscle from all the Protein and working out on a regular basis? At the end of the day I look better and feel better that’s all that really matters to me but I see my surgeon Friday and I’ not sure if he will be pleased with the fact that the scale is not really moving.

Sometimes inches are better then weight...Muscle weighs more then fat. So don't get to discouraged, because the weight will soon follow.

one always follows the other.

Nice to see you Amanda,

At times your body goes through what is known as a recomposition; you're adding some lean mass and losing fat at about the same rate. Be HAPPY! (seriously) that you're dropping inches, it means you're losing FAT. Remember, the scale measures weight, weight includes fat, muscle, Water, waste, etc. Losing inches is pure fat loss. The scale isn't the end all, and never should be. Measurements should come first.

I'm newly banded and I would say - be happy with the drop in cloths sizes. The scale will eventually follow :)

29# and a drop in sizes is wonderful for being 4 months postop! Keep doing what you're doing and it the weight and inches will keep coming off.

I have lost 33# since my surgery on 12-2-2010. I look and feel great, no sagging skin or Hair loss, a bonus for not losing super fast. :P

It will be a month since i had surgery and I have only lost 15 pounds. However, I have loss inches and so far dropped one pant and shirt size. I'm thrilled because prior to this surgery I would not have lost this much weight and clothing size like this. Keep up the great work!

Congratz girl, you've did great! I just wish that I would have seen those inches come off. I've went from a 18W to a 16.

I kinda feel the same way. I was banded on 6/17/11 and have lost a total of 24lbs. But i have gone down from a size 22 to 18. I look and feel like I have lost a lot of inches. In the last 4 weeks I have lost 5lbs, so coming off slow but I feel great! Keep up the good work!

That is great news!!

The PA at the office told me that women especially go through losing inches, but not the weight.

I am going throuugh that now. For the past two months, I have only lost about 7 lbs. But I certainly do feel a difference in my clothing.

It does get frustrating for me, but iI jsut have to remember it is a step in the right direction!!

Ok people a pound is a pound. I hate when people say muscle weighs more than fat! So not true!!! One POUND of nails weighs the same as one POUND of feathers! That being said most of the time you lose weight starting with the last place you put it on. It's a slow process but you'll get there! Good luck :)

I was going to say this same thing. LOL.

I am losing a ton of inches and have lost 35 lbs since my surgery. As my doc put it, the fat and muscle weigh the same, but the muscle and the fat LOOK very different. Google "one pound of fat vs one pound of muscle." You can see that muscle is much more dense than fat so as you lose the fat and workout, you will be smaller...so keep losing those inches!! :D

I've only lost 6 pounds since surgery but 2 inches off waist and hips (haven't done other measurements). I'm back into my size 14 pants for first time in forever. They look good...

:) so, it is very possible and I'm loving whatever progress I make.

Body composition is a very interesting thing, but muscle gain takes time, like if you've gained 2lb in a week, eaten perfectly and worked out like crazy, you arent really correct in saying you've gained muscle. Virtually no woman can gain like that.

But over time, you can definitely change your composition, look better, get fitter and be more muscular/less fat - you'll lose inches perhaps and it wont necessarily show on the scales.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
