Arms aka Bat Wings :(

Recommended Posts

My surgery was 4/14/11. I was 293 lbs and I'm not down to 230. My arms are horrible already, and I still have at least another 60 lbs to go. I've been reading different posts on here and it seems that insurance doesn't cover arms, but is there anyone out there who has gotten them done via health insurance? The hanging skin isn't necessarily a discomfort yet, but I can imagine if it continues, it will be. I try and tone them every time I'm at the gym, but I really haven't seen any results. They actually look bigger than before my surgery due to the hanging skin. Any comments or ideas???

Oh, Honey, you think your arms are bad...just wait til you get a load of your thighs after you lose the majority of your weight! Unfortunately, insurance isn't going to pay for either one! Discomfort or not it won't be deemed a medical necessity. They will pay for your stomach because you can get yeast infections under that skin. The best thing you can do is try to tone them the best you can and drink lots of Water. It helps the skin's elasticity.

I have the same problem. i have lost about 50 pounds and my arms keep waving back at me. The also look puckered like cellulite. You can build the muscle on the top, but the bat wing part is just flappy skin. It is really miserable during the summer when short sleeves are a must.

I, too, am getting that cellulite lumpy skin near my armpit... If I put my hand on my hip, they look ok, but if I stretch out my arm oh boy!!! I was noticing how bad they were moving around last night while I was at Zumba :(

I wish I could just squoosh it all away. Can live with thighs, at 42 not looking to start wear booty shorts anyway! LOL But I am going to a backyard sweet 16 in August for my niece and wish I could wear a cute sun dress or maxi dress. By the time you add the shrug, it is like wearing a sweater in the heat.

I have noticed when I am swimming even my forearm flows back and forth. I have seen people who have had the skin tightened under the arm and they have a long scar that goes the length of the arm. i think we are fighting a losing battle.

I did read where SOME insurances are starting to cover cosmetic surgery for weight loss patients! Some requirements may be: 100 lbs lost and kept off for at least a year, rashes, etc. It's definitely worth checking into! I am hopeful!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
